A 13-year-old girl is fighting for life after the e-bike she was riding collided with an SUV in regional Victoria.

Police say a black Nissan X trail crashed with an e-bike on Urquhart St in Castlemaine, about 130km northwest of Melbourne, at 5.30pm on Monday.

Two youths, a 13-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy, were riding the e-bike at the time.

The girl was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries while the boy was also hospitalised but with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Nissan stopped at the scene and police are continuitng to investigate what happened.

In Victoria, people of any age can ride an e-bike without a licence.

NSW is looking to ban children from riding e-bikes by the end of the year.

A review is currently being done by Transport for NSW which will recommend a legal minimum age between 12 and 16.
