Human remains have been found during the search for a missing bushwalker in Tasmania.
The remains were discovered in dense bushland in the EagleHawk Tier area in Underwood in Northern Tasmania by a member of the public and are believed to belong to missing bushwalker Peter Willoughby.
The volunteer had been searching the area as part of a continuing public search group efforts to find the 76-year-old Scottsdale local after he became separated from a group he was walking with in heavy bushland back in October last year.
“The volunteer contacted police immediately after the discovery, and officers from the Northern District, along with specialist forensic personnel, are attending the scene,” Inspector Aleena Crack said on Saturday.
Despite extensive search from police, ambulance and SES search and rescue resources, severe weather events in the area around the time Willoughby went missing halted progress, and did not allow for helicopter or drone resources to assist in the search.
However, after eight months of waiting, police said Willoughby’s family may now be able to receive closure and had been notified of the discovery.

“Forensic testing is yet to be completed, however at this stage we can confirm the remains appear to be an adult human male,” Crack said.
“We understand how distressing this development may be for his loved ones, and while everyone involved hopes it will help to provide answers, formal forensic analysis is required before we can determine whether the remains belong to Peter.
“Our thoughts are with the Mr Willoughby’s family and loved ones. A report will be prepared for the coroner.”
