A woman has been badly injured trying to stop two roaming dogs that set upon her small pet, killing it.

The woman bravely put herself in harm’s way during the savage attack, which played out for more than a minute, CCTV showed.

The footage captured the woman’s pet dog being ripped from her arms on Sycamore Rise in Dianella, a suburb in Perth’s north, on Saturday morning.

A neighbour brandishing a pole ran over to help disperse the dogs and keep them away, but it was already too late.

The injured pet dog was rushed to the vet but could not be saved.

“I heard a lady continuing to shriek and then crying,” one local told 7NEWS.

The woman required surgery for bites to her hand and arm, it is understood.

The dogs responsible for the attack were seized by rangers and are currently impounded.

“I have seen the footage and it’s probably one of the most extreme and probably the most distressing pieces of footage of a dog attack I have seen in my time as mayor,” City of Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin told 7NEWS.

The aggressive dogs had been loose for almost an hour before they targeted the pet.

An investigation is underway.

“It will lead to a prosecution. There is no good ending for those two dogs, whichever way it goes,” Irwin said.
