Kevin Durant’s return to the Golden State Warriors was very close to becoming a reality during last season. The Phoenix Suns had made the decision to trade away the NBA superstar, and although he ultimately landed elsewhere, Golden State shocked the league by stepping in to facilitate the deal—receiving two players in the process.

After privately telling Draymond Green that he didn’t want to return to the Warriors because,

“As a player, I’m too expensive. Joining any team midseason would be a huge hit to their roster,”
Durant found a new home for the 2025–26 NBA season.

Shams Charania, an ESPN reporter, posted on X (formerly Twitter) on June 22nd:

“The Phoenix Suns are trading two-time NBA Finals MVP Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the 10th pick in the 2025 draft, and five second-round picks.”

However, Durant’s blockbuster trade wasn’t officially finalized until July 6th, during the NBA transaction window. That’s when the Golden State Warriors entered the spotlight by confirming they had acquired two players as part of the multi-team deal involving KD.

So, who did they get?

Golden State officially confirmed the two players they received in the Kevin Durant trade—to strengthen the roster alongside Stephen Curry and company.

Through the Golden State Warriors’ official media account, it was confirmed that the San Francisco team not only helped facilitate the trade of Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets by swapping the 41st pick with the Phoenix Suns for the 52nd pick—ultimately using it to select Alex Toohey—but also revealed that Golden State received the draft rights to Jahmai Mashack, the 59th pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, from the Rockets.

Mashack, a 22-year-old shooting guard from the University of Tennessee, averaged 6 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game in his most recent collegiate season.
