“It’s Really Bad…”: Reuben Owen Faces ‘Life-Threatening’ Setback on the Farm — What’s Happening to the Our Yorkshire Farm Star?

Our Yorkshire Farm star Reuben Owen lamented a “life-threatening” setback on Tuesday (July 8).

The second season of Reuben’s series, Reuben Owen: Life in the Dales, is currently airing on Channel 5.

It follows Reuben as he continues to build his emerging heavy plant machinery business in the remote Yorkshire Dales with his family and friends.

Tonight’s episode saw spring arrive in the Dales and the season brought a flurry of activity.

The team’s first job was to tackle Reuben’s huge order of cropped stones. As the group hand finished a hundred tonnes in the disused quarry, they visited a family run stone merchants to learn from the professionals.

Elsewhere, Reuben’s girlfriend Jess faced her busiest time of year as lambing season began on her family’s farm.

While Reuben and Jess drove through the field, they encountered a problem when they spotted a newborn lamb that was in need of immediate attention.

“I don’t think that ewe is letting that lamb suck, she keeps turning when he’s trying to suck,” Jess explained.

The couple went over to examine the lamb to see if it had taken any milk, and whether it needed further treatment.

“This lamb was born about an hour ago, and he hasn’t sucked. He’s got cold and just laid and shivered. She hasn’t really licked him either,” Jess said as she got hold of the lamb.

The anxious ewe’s infant needed to drink some milk urgently or it could face death within hours. Therefore, both of the animals needed to be taken inside.

Jess and Reuben eventually managed to get the ewe to intake some of its mother’s milk, with Reuben noting: “This will be the most important meal of his life.”

“He needs to have it quickly as well because the colostrum is full of all the antibodies from the ewe.”

Jess then explained that the lamb could contract watery mouth disease if they didn’t get the colostrum, adding: “It’s really bad, it can be life-threatening.”

She continued: “Once his belly’s full then it’ll be great. I was panicked because I thought if she goes in there with sixty sheep, they won’t know who she is.”

Reuben quickly praised his girlfriend, saying: “That’s another little life saved, well done darling,”

After giving the lamb a life-saving feed, Jess took it inside to get it dried and warmed up, before safely returning it to its flock on the field.
