Set in the perpetually cold, isolated small town of Massena, New York, the story opens in 1998 with the arrest of Elizabeth Caulfield (Kaye Tuckerman), a female serial killer who abducted five young girls over a decade, pretending they were her daughters. Four were found buried on her property; only one—Christina Bowden—escaped alive.
Fast-forward 20 years: Adult Christina is a schoolteacher rebuilding her life, even pursuing adoption of a troubled teen named Lisa (Willow McCarthy). Her fragile peace shatters when Officer Jamie Nwosu informs her that Elizabeth has escaped prison during a transfer accident. As strange events unfold—scratched hands, blackouts, and threats to those around her—Christina fears her abductor is coming to finish what she started.

Iwuji’s Jamie, a compassionate detective new to the town, takes a personal interest in the case—and in Christina—while digging into old files raises doubts about the original investigation. Supporting cast includes Geoffrey Cantor as a skeptical former sheriff and Ned Van Zandt in key roles, adding layers of suspicion.
The film’s strength lies in its psychological depth rather than jump scares. Morrissey crafts a moody atmosphere, exploring themes of identity, motherhood, and inherited evil. Critics praised the performances, with Johnson carrying the emotional weight and Iwuji bringing nuance to his role. Though some found the two-hour runtime slow and dialogue stiff, others hailed it as a “thinking person’s thriller” with an original spin on familiar tropes.

Spoiler Warning: Plot and Ending Details Ahead
The narrative builds to a series of revelations that reframe everything. Elizabeth, a former nurse fired for erratic behavior, had an affair with a police officer—implied to be former sheriff Gerry Bailey—resulting in a biological daughter, Katie Caulfield.
Katie, longing for sisters, coerced her mother into abducting girls matching her age each year. When the victims tried to escape, Elizabeth killed them, with young Katie assisting in burials. The final abducted girl was Christina, who became Katie’s close friend. They planned to flee together, but Katie backed out. Elizabeth caught and killed the real Christina, burying her in front of Katie.
To survive and escape blame, Katie assumed the dead girl’s identity, becoming “Christina Bowden”—the “girl who got away.” Adult “Christina” has dissociated, suppressing her true role as accomplice and mastermind behind the kidnappings.
Elizabeth’s escape isn’t to hunt the survivor but to protect—or enable—her daughter, eliminating threats like the adoptive teen Lisa and others who get too close. In the climax, “Christina” confronts her mother, leading to violence. The film ends ambiguously: After chaos, including murders tied to the Bailey family, a paramedic asks the injured woman’s name. She whispers “Katie,” confirming the switch.

This twist—revealing the protagonist as the hidden villain—has drawn comparisons to films like Longlegs for its eerie familiarity and psychological horror. Fans appreciate how it forces rewatches, connecting dots like Christina’s unexplained injuries and her fixation on “sisters.”
Released by Quiver Distribution in limited theaters and VOD in August 2021, the low-budget indie earned mixed reviews (5.3/10 on IMDb, fresh audience buzz on Rotten Tomatoes) but has found a cult following on streaming. Its exploration of female serial killers and identity theft sets it apart in a genre often dominated by slasher tropes.
As The Girl Who Got Away climbs charts again, it proves some horrors linger longest in the mind.
