Authorities are seeking the public’s help to solve a shooting that killed Saturah Hayes, 17, and injured four others
The shooting occurred during a pre-prom event in Brownsville, Tenn.
Friends and family remember Saturah as a loyal friend and hard-working student with a genuine spirit
Authorities in Tennessee are seeking the public’s help as they investigate a shooting last week that killed a teen.
The investigation began after police responded to a park in Brownsville, Tenn., on Friday, May 8 and found five people suffering from gunshot wounds, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said in a statement.
All five of them were taken to the hospital, where one of the victims died, according to the statement.
The deceased victim was identified as Saturah Hayes in a statement issued by Haywood County Schools. She was just 17, according to WREG.
Officials who spoke to WREG said the shooting occurred during a pre-prom event at the park.
Saturah is being remembered as a loyal friend and a hard-working student, her friends and school say.
“One summer, I was real depressed. This girl came to my house every day of the summer and got me up out my bed and made me come outside,” Keyana Thompson told Action News 5. “She has the most genuine spirit ever.”
Her mother Astacia Hayes shared the “last picture” of Saturah on Facebook.
“I tried to protect her from stuff like this and the one time I knew she would be ok, her room is empty,” the grieving mother wrote.
On Sunday, the Brownsville community came together to support Astacia as her daughter’s remains were being handed over, Action News 5 reported.
“My girl would be so happy right now that the whole town came down to see her and supported her through this, cause by my girl didn’t deserve this,” Saturah’s friend Emily Earnest told the outlet.
