For nearly two decades, the disappearance of Madeleine McCann has remained one of the world’s most haunting unsolved mysteries. In May 2007, the three-year-old vanished from her family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal — sparking a global manhunt, endless theories, and years of heartbreak for her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann.
Today, one man stands at the center of the investigation: Christian Brueckner, a convicted rapist and paedophile with a long and disturbing criminal history. He has been named the prime suspect in Madeleine’s disappearance — yet, despite mounting evidence and years of suspicion, he continues to deny any involvement.

A Life Marked by Violence and Depravity
Christian Brueckner’s past is a catalogue of crime. Born in Germany, he grew up troubled, moving in and out of youth institutions before turning to theft, drugs, and sexual offences. Over the years, he has served multiple prison sentences across Europe.
In 2005, while living in Portugal, Brueckner brutally raped a 72-year-old American woman in her home — a crime that went unsolved for years until DNA evidence later tied him to the attack. He was finally convicted in 2019 and sentenced to seven years in prison in Germany.
At the time Madeleine disappeared in 2007, Brueckner was living just a few miles from the McCann family’s holiday apartment. He was working odd jobs, selling drugs, and staying in a camper van that police believe may have played a role in the abduction.
The Madeleine McCann Connection
When German investigators re-examined old evidence, they found several unsettling links between Brueckner and the McCann case.
Phone records show that he received a call near Praia da Luz on the night Madeleine vanished.
A camper van linked to him was reportedly seen in the area around the same time.
Witnesses later came forward describing a man matching his description lurking near the apartment complex in the days before the disappearance.
These findings led German prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters to publicly name Brueckner as the prime suspect in 2020. Wolters later stated that authorities believe Madeleine is dead — and that they are convinced Brueckner is responsible.
What Brueckner Says
From his prison cell in Germany, Brueckner has continued to deny any connection to Madeleine’s disappearance. Through letters and his lawyer, he insists that he had nothing to do with it, calling the accusations “nonsense” and claiming he is being targeted because of his criminal past.
However, several acquaintances have told investigators a different story. One former friend, Helge Büsching, alleged that Brueckner made chilling comments years ago — suggesting he “knew what happened” to Madeleine and that “she didn’t even scream.”
Brueckner denies ever making such remarks, saying those who accuse him are seeking attention or revenge.
Ongoing Investigations and Legal Battles
German and Portuguese police continue to work on the case, but progress has been painfully slow. While investigators say they have “strong evidence,” they have not disclosed what that evidence is — and so far, no DNA, no body, and no direct forensic link between Brueckner and Madeleine have been made public.
Brueckner currently faces several other charges in Germany, unrelated to the McCann case, including sexual offences against children and other women in Portugal between 2000 and 2017. He has already been convicted in some cases and acquitted in others.
Despite the delays, prosecutors maintain confidence that he is the man responsible for Madeleine’s disappearance — though they admit they may never have enough to prove it in court.
A Case That Still Haunts the World
For the McCann family, hope and grief have lived side by side for 18 long years. Each new report, each new lead, reopens old wounds. Kate and Gerry McCann have said they will never stop searching for the truth — or for their daughter.
Meanwhile, Christian Brueckner remains behind bars in Germany, serving time for other crimes while awaiting further trials. Whether he is ever formally charged — or found guilty — in Madeleine’s disappearance remains uncertain.
What is clear is that this story continues to cast a long shadow across Europe. Nearly two decades on, the question that first echoed through a quiet Portuguese night still hangs unanswered:
Where is Madeleine McCann?
