Police are investigating a multi-vehicle crash near Violet Town in Victoria’s north-east that left a truck driver dead on Friday afternoon.

Police believe a B-double truck collided with a road worker’s truck and then veered across the median strip, where it clipped a car, before it rolled and caught fire.

The driver of the truck, who is yet to be identified, died at the scene.

The Country Fire Authority (CFA), Victoria Police, State Emergency Service (SES), Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV), and Ambulance Victoria all responded to the incident.

The CFA said seven of its crews attended the scene after reports of a crash just before 1:30pm.

Ambulance Victoria said paramedics from the Advanced Life Support and Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance teams attended the scene.

Two adults and two children were taken to Northeast Health Wangaratta by road in a stable condition.

A man in his 50s was also transported by road in a stable condition to Goulburn Valley Health in Shepparton.

The CFA issued a warning for a hazardous liquid spill in the area immediately surrounding the crash, but authorities said there was no threat to the community.

The Hume Freeway remains closed southbound as crews continue recovery and cleanup works, while northbound lanes reopened overnight.

The closure is expected to remain in place through Saturday morning.

Drivers heading south towards Melbourne are advised to detour at Violet Town and use Murchison-Violet Town Road through Meipoll to meet the Goulburn Valley Freeway, then travel south to Seymour to re-join the Hume Freeway.
