But just weeks later, their relationship quietly unravelled – and now Rachel is revealing the heartbreaking truth behind their split
‘It just reminded me of how much I was in love with Steven and how much he meant to me… and how much I was willing to give up to be with him.’
While viewers watched their love story play out on screen, Rachel was already dealing with the painful reality behind the scenes.
‘It’s just really hard to get to this point… rewatching it knowing the total outcome,’ she admitted.
According to Rachel, the cracks began almost immediately after filming wrapped.
Despite making big promises about building a future together, Steven returned to his normal life in Sydney – and never truly showed up for her.
‘We’d really spoken about him coming to Melbourne… that was his opportunity to show up for me,’ she explained.
‘But there was always an excuse and a reason not to come.’
In a devastating blow, Rachel said one conversation changed everything.

Where do YOU think it really went wrong for them?
‘He listed the reasons why he couldn’t come… and they were all to do with me,’ she revealed.
‘That really took me by surprise. I should have been the reason you’d want to run to Melbourne.’
As the distance grew, Rachel found herself questioning the dynamic of their relationship – and whether she was the only one fighting for it.
‘I was like, maybe I should just jump on a plane and go to Sydney and remind him how much I care,’ she said.
But in a moment of clarity, she stopped herself.
‘What stopped me was thinking… why am I always the one running to him?’
‘When does he run to me and show up for me?’
In the end, it was Steven who pulled away – admitting he couldn’t be the man Rachel wanted.

‘He listed the reasons why he couldn’t come… and they were all to do with me,’ she revealed
‘He said, “I don’t think I can be the man that Rachel wants me to be,”‘ she recalled.
But Rachel insists she never asked him to change.
‘I’ve never asked Steven to be anything other than himself,’ she said.
‘I was willing to move my whole life to Sydney for him.’
Instead, she believes his feelings simply didn’t match hers.
‘I think deep down he didn’t want the same things… and he didn’t want to hurt me,’ she said.
‘But ultimately, he did.’
For Rachel, the split reopened old wounds she had hoped this experiment would finally heal.

Rachel insists she never asked him to change. ‘I’ve never asked Steven to be anything other than himself,’ she said. ‘I was willing to move my whole life to Sydney for him’
Having previously admitted she’d never felt truly chosen in relationships, she said the breakup only reinforced that painful pattern.
‘It’s the same thing… that doubt lingering,’ she said.
‘And again, it proved to be true.’ Despite the heartbreak, Rachel insists there’s no animosity between them.
‘Steven still has a very special place in my heart,’ she said.
‘Seeing him is always really nice… it’s weirdly still a bit of a safe place for me.’
The pair remain on good terms, with Rachel revealing they still share a connection that many other couples from the experiment haven’t been able to maintain.
In the wake of the breakup, Rachel jetted off to Thailand with co-star Alyssa in a bid to heal away from the chaos.
‘It was a trip for us to both heal… it definitely brought us closer,’ she said.
Now, she’s focusing on the positives – including the personal growth she’s gained from the experience.
‘I feel like I’ve found a sense of confidence in myself,’ she said.
‘I don’t regret going on the show… I got to meet Steven and I’ve grown so much.’
Rachel and Steven’s relationship was one of the season’s biggest slow-burn love stories – but ultimately, it couldn’t survive outside the experiment.
Reports have since confirmed the pair split just weeks after choosing each other, with real–world pressures and differing expectations playing a major role.
And while their Final Vows may have looked like a happy ending, Rachel’s emotional confession proves the truth was far more complicated.
‘I was so excited for our future,’ she said.
‘But in the end… it just didn’t happen.’
Rachel and Steven’s relationship timeline: What went wrong
Early cracks – honeymoon tears over ‘harmless’ joke
Their relationship didn’t exactly get off to a smooth start.
During their honeymoon, what should have been a light–hearted moment quickly spiralled when Steven made a comment about Rachel’s love of footy – leaving her visibly upset and fleeing their date in tears.
It was the first sign their communication styles were wildly different, with Rachel taking things to heart while Steven struggled to read the room.
Brutal rejection during Intimacy Week
Things took a devastating turn during Intimacy Week – a moment many insiders say defined their entire relationship.
In a vulnerable gesture, Rachel planned a romantic ‘Love Actually’–style moment, asking Steven for a meaningful kiss.
But instead of leaning in, he shut her down.
‘I can kiss you Rachel, I can kiss you but I’m not sure that it’ll make you feel something,’ he admitted, confessing he felt more like they were ‘friends’ than lovers.
Rachel was left humiliated, storming off in tears as the reality of their disconnect hit hard.
‘We were all rooting for them’ – early promise
Despite the setbacks, the pair initially showed real promise.
At their first Commitment Ceremony, they appeared completely smitten, bonding over shared experiences and a similar sense of humour.
‘I really like Steven… I will tell you every freaking day if I have to,’ Rachel gushed.
At the time, they were seen as one of the experiment’s most genuine couples – a stark contrast to the chaos unfolding around them.
Retreat drama brings them closer – then blows up
Ironically, one of their strongest moments came during one of the season’s most explosive group settings.
At the couples retreat, Rachel was left humiliated after a crude comment about her intimacy with Steven was aired in front of the group.
But rather than tearing them apart, it initially brought them closer.
Rachel later revealed Steven ‘had her back’ during the fallout, strengthening their bond at the time.
However, the situation also exposed deeper issues around trust, communication and how they handled pressure from others.
The underlying issue – friendship vs romance
Throughout the experiment, one theme kept resurfacing – Steven wasn’t sure if the spark was truly there.
While Rachel appeared all–in from the start, Steven repeatedly questioned whether their connection was romantic or simply platonic.
That imbalance became the quiet tension running through their entire journey.
