Spoilers Ahead
The latest season of Netflix’s regency drama ‘Bridgerton’ is receiving praise from fans. The climax carriage scene of the first part of the third season has particularly intrigued viewers. Fans are raving over the intense chemistry between Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) as they confess their feelings for each other and make out in the carriage.
The scene, which appears in the fourth episode, titled ‘Old Friends’, was shot over three days, Luke revealed in one of his interviews.
“There was a different energy on set that day. We were locked in a carriage together with cameras outside. So it felt kind of real. It did feel intimate. It’s very honest,” the actor told Vanity Fair.
Colin Bridgerton’s carriage scene had him confessing how he cannot get over the kiss he had with Penelope in the second episode. After initial hesitation about ruining her friendship with Colin by accepting his feelings, Penelope tells him, “I would very much like to be more than friends.” This is followed by a steamy make-out session between the two, with a cover of Pitbull’s ‘Give Me Everything’ playing in the background.

To make the scene look authentic, Coughlan told The Today Show, people were rocking the carriage manually from the outside. “It was on a soundstage, actually. With a bunch of burly dudes shaking it on the outside,” she said.
However, given the space constraints inside the carriage, Newton and Coughlan were alone in it and couldn’t hear the director, Andrew Ahn, when he called ‘cut’. Coughlan reasoned that they continued to kiss because the director’s voice didn’t reach them. “So [the crew] were all looking at us in the monitors, being like, ‘What are they doing? What are they doing?'” she shared.
The scene ultimately turned out well as the actors trusted each other. “We had so much control, we felt really empowered. We knew what points we had to hit, but it didn’t feel stilted or choreographed,” Nicola Coughlan added.

In a video where she and Luke Newton are reacting to the carriage scene, Coughlan also described the four things they wanted the scene to be: “Beautiful, touching, romantic, and sexy.”
Another detail of the scene which caught viewers’ attention was Colin fixing Penelope’s gown after the carriage stops at the Bridgerton house. When a viewer asked about whose idea it was to fix Penelope’s dress with “just a few fingers”, director Ahn responded, “I wish I could take credit for this incredible moment of… physical authenticity, but I did not give this piece of direction. It was all Luke Newton!”
At the end of the scene, Colin Bridgerton proposes marriage to Penelope Featherington. But the scene ends abruptly. Now, viewers are yet to know whether she accepted the proposal.
