Fans who have watched Netflix’s latest true crime entry say it will make you question your own life choices.

The ‘gut wrenching’ new film just added to the streaming giant’s library, is already being labelled as the ‘most uncomfortable’ yet. The Crash was only just made available today (May 15) but viewers are already flocking to it and feeling its emotional impact.

Netflix’s synopsis for the film explains how a car carrying three young adults slams into a brick building at 100 miles per hour in Strongsville, Ohio, leaving two lives lost and one sole survivor. The driver, 17-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla, was driving her boyfriend, Dom, and his friend, Davion, home from a party when the unthinkable happened.

But as detectives comb through the wreckage, what first appears to be a tragic accident begins to look like a calculated crime scene. The Crash takes a deep dive into the volatile relationship at the centre, examining the shifting narratives of that fateful night to explore where a fatal mistake ends and cold-blooded murder begins.

The film, which lasts for a breezy total runtime of around 94 minutes utilises all aspects fans will come to expect from a true crime documentary for the biggest emotional impact. There are several moments of police body cam footage as officers arrive on the scene and talk to relatives for the first time, in harrowing scenes that some might find difficult to watch.

There is also the CCTV footage included which shows the incredible speed the car was travelling right before the crash. Netflix’s latest production also includes interviews with friends and family of both the victims and Mackenzie Shirilla’s. Not only that but the film crew talk to Mackenzie directly in her first interview in prison, which is sure to cause a reaction.

While the feature length doc was only just made available to stream this morning, some early viewers are already sharing their thoughts. It hasn’t yet gathered enough critic reviews to earn itself a rating on website Rotten Tomatoes but that should only be a matter of time.

One person who managed to watch it as soon as it was available quickly posted on social media saying: “It’s a jaw-dropping watch!” Meanwhile, one early review declared that “the Crash is Netflix’s true crime at its most uncomfortable”.

They also labelled it as “a deeply unsettling new documentary” before adding: “The Crash is an excellently produced documentary, which is a must-watch for true-crime fans. It’s an emotional rollercoaster which will keep you intrigued, invested and guessing from start to finish.”

Another reviewer claimed: “The documentary delivers a gut-wrenching look at grief and a final, haunting twist that leaves the audience to judge Mackenzie Shirilla for themselves.”

Meanwhile one verdict warned that viewers will end up reassessing crucial parts of their own lives afterwards, as the film looks to spark heated debate among fans.

They said: “The Crash is more than just a true-crime documentary; it’s a call to action to look at your own screen and ask yourself: if my life were stripped down to my highlights, what story would it tell? So, if you’re looking for something that will challenge your own life choices, this is the documentary for you.”
