The horrific injuries suffered by a young probationary constable during the Bondi Beach mass shooting, and his heroic efforts to help others even while injured have been revealed.
Jack Hibbert, 22, was shot twice during the chaos of the terrorist attack on Sunday, once in his head and once in his shoulder.
In a statement released by NSW Police on behalf of his family, the extent of the injuries caused by those bullet wounds has been disclosed.
Const. Hibbert was one of two police officers hospitalised after the Bondi attack. The other was Constable Scott Dyson, who had recently learnt he is soon due to become a father.
He had been attached to the Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command for 18 months before he was injured.
Const. Hibbert was just four months into the job and on duty, patrolling the Chanukkah by the Sea celebration at Bondi Beach, when the massacre began.
“Jack was taken to ICU where he was intubated and underwent multiple surgeries,” the statement reads.
“Although miraculously surviving, Jack’s injuries have resulted in a loss of vision in one of his eyes and he now faces a long and challenging recovery ahead, with additional surgeries required.”
Const. Hibbert’s family said that despite being new to the job, “in the face of a violent and tragic incident, he responded with courage, instinct, and selflessness, continuing to protect and help others whilst injured, until he was physically no longer able to”.
“Jack was simply doing his job – a job he deeply loves – driven by a commitment to protect the community, even at great personal cost.”
The family said many of Const. Hibbert’s colleagues had visited him in hospital since the incident and recounted his bravery and described his devotion to the community.
“They described how Jack acted, he moved toward people in need, not away from danger, and continued helping others while seriously injured.
“The support from the police force and hospital staff has been unmatched and we are beyond grateful. We thank the wider community for their kindness, support, and prayers for Jack and our family during this difficult time.”
The family has asked for privacy as they support Const. Hibbert through his recovery.
