Speaking today, Detective Inspector David Gill said that ambulance officers arrived first and found a man and woman dead.

On entering the property, he said “a male person appears to have ended his own life” and the female resident had “received injuries causing her death”.

“Investigations thus far have indicated that it is a family violence case and we are treating this as a murder-suicide,” Inspector Gill said.

“No firearm was located at the scene, and importantly, no firearm was used”.

Inspector Gill said that police became aware of the incident when the male person at the residence contacted a close family member.

That family member then rang emergency services.

Police believe no-one else was in the house at the time.

“We believe the deaths occurred shortly after the Triple Zero (000) call was made to Tasmania police this morning,” Inspector Gill said.

He said he had spoken earlier with two close family members of the couple who had assisted police “greatly” and thanked them for their bravery, but did not offer more detail.

“Out of respect of the family members, and due to the nature of the investigation, I won’t go into too much detail,” he said.

‘Extremely confronting’ scene, say police

Inspector Gill said the scene was “extremely confronting” for first responders.

“These images that they have seen will stay with them,” he said.

“Our initial investigations indicate the incident was contained to the residence, and at this stage, police do not believe anyone else was involved,” Inspector Gill said.
