An investigation is underway after a child’s finger tip was reportedly severed at a Queensland early childhood centre.
The child’s finger was injured at the Free Range Kids Laidley 2 Centre, west of Brisbane, on February 24, the Department of Education has confirmed.
Part of the 10-month-old’s right ring finger was detached, as reported by the Toowoomba Chronicle.
The department confirmed the child received medical attention.
“Protecting the health, safety and wellbeing of children attending early childhood education and care services is the number one priority of the Queensland Early Childhood Regulatory Authority,” a spokesperson said in a statement.
“The Regulatory Authority is aware of a matter involving a child sustaining a finger injury which required medical attention.
“As the incident is currently under investigation, no further information can be provided.
“The Regulatory Authority continues to work with the sector to address the safety and quality of early childhood education and care services across Queensland.”
Free Range Kids Laidley 2 Centre is currently rated by the Australian Children’s Education & Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) as Meeting National Quality Standards.
The centre is one of seven Active Kids Early Learning centres across Queensland.
The centre’s management has been contacted for comment.
