NEED TO KNOW
On Monday, March 30, a Utah mother called 911 to report a fight between her grown son and her husband, police said
While the woman, Kaylene Allred, 61, was on the phone, gunfire rang out and she told the dispatcher people inside the home had been shot
More gunshots rang out and Allred stopped responding, according to police
A Utah mother was shot and killed and two of her grown children were severely wounded by her husband in a tragic murder-suicide, according to police.
On Monday, March 30, just after 10:30 p.m., Kaylene Allred, 61, of Kearns, was on the phone with a 911 dispatcher when shots rang out inside her home, Unified Police Department PIO Sgt. Aymee Race tells PEOPLE.
Allred had called 911 at 10:27 p.m. to report a domestic dispute between a stepfather and son, saying there were “threats of a weapon” and that alcohol and drugs were involved, Race says.
While she was on the phone, gunfire rang out, with Allred telling the dispatcher that people inside the home had been shot.
At 10:33 p.m., additional shots were heard and Allred stopped responding, according to Race.
The dispatcher could hear screaming inside the home.
When officers arrived at the scene, a man — identified in a GoFundMe as Kaylene’s son, Christian — ran out of the house, telling officers that he and his sister — also identified in the GoFundMe as Brittany — and their mother, had been shot.
Race tells PEOPLE they were each suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
The siblings were rushed to a local hospital where they were initially listed in serious condition. As of Tuesday, April 7, the two were listed in stable condition.
Officers found Kaylene Allred and her husband, Floyd, dead of gunshot wounds inside the home, Race says, adding that before the deadly shooting, Unified Police had been called to the home for non-criminal domestic violence incidents.
“Our hearts go out to the family,” Race says. “Domestic violence can happen anywhere at any time. There are a lot of resources out there where people can get help.”
In one GoFundMe, “Support for Kaylene’s Kids After Tragedy,” the organizer wrote that Kaylene “was a dear friend and coworker who brought warmth and kindness to everyone she met.”
Her kids, the organizer wrote, “were hospitalized and are now facing not only the emotional pain of losing their mother but also the challenge of recovering from their own injuries.”
Funds raised will help to defray funeral costs and help pay for hospital bills.
In another GoFundMe, “Support Brittany & Christian After Shooting,” the organizer wrote that the two siblings were “recovering after being shot multiple times by their stepfather in a senseless act of domestic violence. Their mother, Kaylene, was killed before the stepfather took his own life.”
Brittany is “one of the most loving and caring people you will ever meet. She has already faced numerous medical battles of her own, and despite it all, she has never stopped showing up for the people around her,” the fundraiser reads. “Christian is a young father with a little girl who needs him home and healthy. Now, they are facing mounting medical and funeral costs, and Brittany is left without her home or parents as she begins to rebuild her life.”
