Netflix has confirmed the addition of another iconic member of the Addams family in Wednesday season 2, which sets up the opportunity for another classic franchise character to finally be introduced. As a spinoff of the iconic characters from The Addams Family comics, movies, and sitcom, Netflix’s Wednesday primarily focuses on the titular character, with the others in the kooky bunch largely being side characters in season 1. However, with other major members of Wednesday’s Addams family tree being bumped up to regulars in season 2, it’s fitting that the show is expanding its introductions of Wednesday’s relatives.

Among the new characters being introduced in Wednesday season 2 is Grandmama, the grandmother of Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday Addams. It’s still unclear whether Grandmama, played by Joanna Lumley, will be portrayed as Gomez or Morticia’s mother, given her familial status differs in various Addams Family adaptations, but the former seems more likely given the show’s focus on the Addamses’ ancestry. With Wednesday season 2 extending its representation of Addams relatives, perhaps tying into the show’s return to the family’s iconic mansion, it seems likely that another beloved member of their supernatural lineage will appear in the future.

However, the notion that the show is going to the Addams family mansion, and that the Addamses and Frumps have important reputations at Nevermore Academy, means more cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents could still make surprise appearances. Of those not already confirmed to appear in season 2, the biggest missing member of the Addams family is Cousin Itt, who remains one of the franchise’s most iconic characters.

How Wednesday Season 1 Already Referenced Cousin Itt

An Itt family member has an important connection to season 1’s story

Though Cousin Itt has yet to actually appear in Netflix’s Wednesday, the popular TV show did feature a notable reference to him in season 1. When Wednesday and Uncle Fester search for more information on Hydes in the Nightshades’ library during episode 7, they find an important diary hidden by the portrait of Ignatius “Iggy” Itt, a former Nevermore Academy student, Supreme Shade of the Nightshades, and the “right hand” of school founder Nathaniel Faulkner. The portrait reveals that Iggy was the Supreme Shade from 1825 until 1850, with the character also having the same hirsute appearance as all other major iterations of The Addams Family’s Cousin Itt character.

However, despite going into detail about Iggy’s history, Uncle Fester doesn’t make any mention of Netflix’s Wednesday character being a relative of the Addamses. It still seems likely that the Addamses and Ignatius Itt share some ancestry, but it doesn’t appear that Iggy is the same character as the classic Cousin Itt figure. Rather, Iggy is likely a great ancestor of Cousin Itt, similar to Goody Addams’ link to Wednesday and her immediate family. If so, this could mean that Iggy or one of his descendants ended up marrying and having a child with one of Gomez’s ancestors, thus explaining the familial connection between the Itts and Addamses.

Will Wednesday Season 2 Feature More Addams Family Characters?

The Addamses have a large family tree to pull from

It doesn’t seem like Wednesday‘s extension of Addams family characters will stop at Grandmama during or after season 2. Rather, the show has a great opportunity to introduce more unique members of the kooky bunch, which could be accomplished in a similar fashion to the party that Gomez and Morticia throw for their friends and family in the 1991 The Addams Family movie. During that scene, the movie was able to give brief introductions to numerous Addams family members, including Cousin Itt. If Wednesday were to include a similar sequence in season 2 or beyond, the show could greatly expand on its portrait of the Addams family tree.

In addition to Cousin Itt, Wednesday season 2 could feature Morticia’s sister Ophelia, who appeared in the 1960s Addams Family sitcom. Additionally, if Grandmama proves to be Gomez’s mother, then Wednesday could also introduce Granny Frump, who serves as Morticia’s mother in various franchise outings. It doesn’t seem likely that Wednesday will feature Pubert Addams, Gomez and Morticia’s infant son in the 1993 Addams Family Values movie, but there are still numerous extended members from past adaptations who could make their way into Netflix’s spinoff show.
