The parents of Bondi hero Ahmed Al Ahmed, who courageously disarmed one of the shooters, have given more details surrounding his brave actions and provided an update on his health.
Mr Ahmed heroically intervened as two gunmen allegedly opened fire on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach on December 14, killing 15 innocent people.
Footage of a man wrestling a weapon from one of the shooters quickly went viral on social media immediately following the attack.
The man was identified as 43-year-old Ahmed Al Ahmed who has been in hospital receiving treatment for the multiple gunshot wounds he sustained during the horrific attack.
His parents have now said their son still has several bullets stuck inside him after he was shot four to five times in the shoulder.
Mohamed Fateh Al Ahmed and Malakeh Hasan Al Ahmed told the ABC they had been advised that some of the bullets were stuck deep in bone.
Mr Ahmed is set to undergo multiple surgeries on Tuesday to remove the bullets.
Ms Ahmed said her son had seen people dying before he rushed in to help.
“He saw they were dying, and people were losing their lives, and when that guy [the shooter] ran out of ammo, he took it from him, but he was hit,” she said.
“We pray that God saves him.”
When she got the call that her son had been shot, Ms Ahmed said she began beating herself up and crying. She was initially told he had been shot in an accident.
Mr Ahmed’s parents said their son had been out for coffee with a friend in Bondi when he heard gunshots.
He saw one of the gunmen using a tree as a shield and waited for him to run out of ammo, before he quickly moved in behind him and manage to remove the gun from his grip.
His father said as this unfolded, the other gunmen on the bridge began firing at his son.
“At the same moment, his (the armed man’s) other friend was on the bridge… it seems he had a sniper rifle, or I don’t know, he tried to kill him and hit him in his shoulder,” his father said.
Mr Ahmed has two young daughters of his own, aged three and six. His parents say he is the sort of person who would step in to help people of any background or religious faith.
“When he did what he did, he wasn’t thinking about the background of the people he’s saving, the people dying in the street,” Mr Ahmed said.
“He doesn’t discriminate between one nationality and another. Especially here in Australia there’s no difference between one citizen and another.”
A GoFundMe set up to support Mr Ahmed has now reached more than $700,000.
