A 12-year-old girl has died in hospital after getting caught in a rip at Trigg Beach on Tuesday night.
A WA Police spokeswoman confirmed the young girl passed away in the early hours of Thursday morning.
On Tuesday, police received a report of two swimmers in distress at the beach around 6.30pm.
“On arrival, it was identified that two girls, both aged 12, had been caught in a rip and pulled out to sea,” a police spokesman said.
“One of the girls was rescued by a surfer and safely brought back to shore.
“The second girl was located unresponsive in the water by the same surfer and brought to shore where police, volunteer lifeguards and two off-duty doctors commenced CPR.”
The child was rushed to Perth Children’s Hospital where WA Police confirmed she had died in the early hours of Thursday morning.
It comes as Surf Life Saving WA issues its Christmas safety warning to swimmers, with research showing the risk of a drowning is more than tripled during public holidays and long weekends.
A total of 13 people drowned over the holiday period last year.
“The predicted scorching temperatures are expected to see people heading to the beach in droves to cool off over Christmas and the holiday break, but surf lifesavers are warning that dangers lurk,” SLSWA general manager Chris Peck said.
“We are urging beachgoers to stay vigilant about their safety, and that of family and friends.”
Swimmers are encouraged to swim at patrolled beaches, and to make sure that loved ones who are visiting over the holiday period, and may not be familiar with beaches, remain safe.
