The search for a missing 55-year-old swimmer at Lovers Point has been indefinitely suspended, as confirmed in a joint media release from local officials. The missing individual, identified as Erica Fox, was a co-founder of the Kelp Krawlers swimming group, which she helped establish two decades ago.
According to reports, Fox was swimming with her usual group on a Sunday morning when tragedy struck. Around noon, a witness on the shoreline reported observing a “large splash,” leading other swimmers to exit the water in concern of a potential shark attack. While all other members of the group returned safely, Fox did not.
Eyewitness accounts suggested that Fox might have encountered a shark while swimming offshore near Lovers Point. One witness, who was driving nearby, reported seeing a shark breach the waves with what appeared to be a human body in its mouth. This alarming sighting prompted immediate concern and action. After a headcount by one of her fellow swimmers confirmed Erica’s absence, authorities were alerted.
The U.S. Coast Guard detailed that the search operations covered an extensive area of over 84 square nautical miles. Sadly, the search was called off after more than 15 hours of efforts, which included rescue boats, drones, and helicopters. Captain Jordan Baldueza, commander of the Coast Guard Sector San Francisco, expressed deep condolences to Fox’s family, friends, and loved ones affected by this tragedy.
James Fox, Erica’s father, expressed his shock and sorrow during an interview, noting that his daughter was engaged in an activity she loved. Erica was a dedicated swimmer and triathlete, with participation in numerous events including two half-Ironman competitions and the annual Escape From Alcatraz triathlon, which she had completed for almost 20 years.
While the immediate search operations have concluded, the Pacific Grove Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Fox’s disappearance. Commander Brian Anderson emphasized the department’s commitment to uncovering the details regarding this heart-wrenching incident.
In light of the events, Lovers Point Beach along with McAbee and San Carlos beaches in Monterey will remain closed through Tuesday. A beach advisory will also be in effect for several nearby beaches, ensuring safety for the community during this difficult time.
