At least 12 people have been killed in a mass shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach Another 29 injured people have been taken to hospitals across Sydney. One gunman was killed at the scene and another is critically injured in hospital.
Video shows two gunmen opening fire from a bridge shortly before 7pm (AEDT) on Sunday. Police later found “improvised explosives” in a car linked to one of the shooters nearby.
NSW Premier Chris Minns and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese say the shooting was targeted at the Jewish community, and police have declared it a “terrorist incident”.
Israel President Isaac Herzog has spoken in the aftermath of the mass shooting.
Police are stepping up their presence in parts of London as a direct response to the Bondi attack.
“While there is no information to suggest any link between the attack in Sydney and the threat level in London, this morning we are stepping up our police presence, carrying out additional community patrols and engaging with the Jewish community to understand what more we can do in the coming hours and days,” London’s Metropolitan Police said in a statement.
There has been a growing number of antisemitic attacks worldwide since October 7, 2023.
World leaders have reacted in shock to the attack on Bondi Beach.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy:
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio:
French President Emmanuel Macron:
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer:
The federal government’s special envoy for combating antisemitism, Jillian Segal, has released the below statement after the Bondi attack.
“Tonight marks the worst fear of the Australian Jewish community becoming reality.
“A peaceful Chanukah gathering at Bondi Beach was attacked. Images emerging tonight are chilling and echo the horrors Australians hoped they would never see here.
“This did not come without warning.
“In Australia, it began on 9 October 2023 at the Sydney Opera House.
“We then watched a march across the Sydney Harbour Bridge waving terrorist flags and glorifying extremist leaders.
“Now death has reached Bondi Beach. These are Australian icons. Targeting them is deliberate.
“This is not random. It is an attack on Australia. My gratitude is with those first responders today who have had to do a job no-one should have to.
“To ordinary Australians, this moment demands clarity. What once seemed distant or uncomfortable can no longer be ignored.
“Taunts from the Opera House steps, synagogues set alight and now massacres at a celebration form a clear pattern.
“This is not the Australia we know and it cannot be the Australia we accept.
“Australia responded decisively after Port Arthur in 1996.
“This moment requires the same action. Words are no longer enough.
“An attack on a peaceful Jewish celebration is an attack on our national character and our way of life. Australia must defend both.
“As Australian Jews light our Chanukah candles tonight, we do so with the heaviest of hearts.

NSW Police is asking for anyone with mobile phone video or dashcam from the Bondi attack to share it with police.
We earlier reported that police had found improvised explosive devices in a car on Campbell Parade near where the shooting took place.
The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that these devices have now been removed.
The exclusion zone has been scaled back but the area is still a crime scene.
