The suspected remains of a toddler last seen alive more than a decade ago have been found buried in a shallow grave at a property in Melbourne’s west.
The 18-month-old was never reported missing after he disappeared in 2014.
In a statement on Wednesday, Victoria Police said what appeared to be human remains were discovered at a property in Brookfield, following a preliminary excavation at 1.30pm.
They are yet to be formally identified but 7 News reports the remains were found buried in a “grave” just 50cm deep.
“The coroner has been advised and a postmortem will occur in due course,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

The remains have been found after an investigation into the disappearance of the toddler, who was not reported missing at the time.
7 News reports the boy lived at the home with his parents and two siblings in 2014, before they moved overseas, possibly to the country of Albania.
The outlet reports police were tipped off by a relative who knew the 18-month-old toddler before his disappearance.

Current residents of the property have no connection to the investigation or to the people who lived at the property at the time.
“Something like this is not supposed to happen but it’s happened 14 years ago. Something very bad. Very terrible,” one resident told 7 News.
An investigation is underway by the Missing Persons Squad.
