TV personality Lynette Bolton says she is as “happy and healthy as can be” as she maintains a positive — and selfless — outlook two months into her battle with triple-negative breast cancer.
Lynette, the wife of Sydney Swans champion and Channel 7 AFL expert Jude Bolton, was diagnosed just before Christmas and went public in early January.
She is now “halfway through the first step” of her treatment but still awaiting the crucial results of genetic testing, with the couple’s two daughters front of mind.
“That’s a big thing,” Lynette told Sunrise.
Lynette began privately documenting her “rollercoaster” journey before the couple told their kids, simply hoping to be able to revisit her how she felt at different stages.
But after telling her family, subsequent social media posts opened up a community.
“We’re not unique, lots of people are going through it,” Lynette said.
“I’m really trying to stay positive and what I love, the people going through the same thing — I just want them to understand that this can be quite a lonely thing, even if you are surrounded by people, so I really do appreciate the people that we have connected with and just let them know that we’re here for you as well.”
Lynette has continued working and recently travelled to New Zealand to film another episode of Channel 7’s Travel Oz show.
Jude said he has been “blown away” by his wife’s resilience and the community’s support.
“We’ve all been involved with charities across the time but your world just gets shaken when it’s one of your partners, and it’s ‘wow, where do start from here’,” he said.
“You look at Lynette, and the way she just shows up and the stories that have come out, people saying I’m two weeks behind you, I don’t know what’s happened, the world feels like it’s been pulled from underneath me — and she’s been there for them as well.”
Lynette’s positivity is so clear that Jude fears their children are yet to realise the extent of the situation.
“Because she just shows up, because she’s just there and positive about it, I think they don’t realise the gravity of what she’s going through,” he said.
“I think one day they will, they’ll look back and go ‘wow mum was there the whole time and just did what she did’.
“I think you have to (be positive). No one prepares for it, it’s just our time at the moment. We’re going to get through it, we’re halfway through the first part
“You’ve just got to try and break it down. So many people are going through a similar struggle and it’s part of life, the highs and lows.”
Lynette found a lump on her breast while in the shower and remains thankful she was aware and acted quickly.
“’I don’t think this is something I should leave’,” she recalls saying to herself.
The “shock” progression from noticing a lump to being diagnosed has prompted Lynette to encourage others to check themselves.
But her message goes beyond women and breast cancer.
“Check your bits, check all your bits, because there’s no differentiation. There’s nothing that says you will or you won’t,” Lynette said.
“I found my lump in the shower. It wasn’t an official check, it was just something that I noticed.
“So please check yours bits — boys, girls, parents, moles on their faces, let’s just be really proactive about keeping healthy and safe.”
