It has been more than three decades since two ten-year-old boys committed one of Britain’s most shocking crimes — the abduction and murder of two-year-old James Bulger. Yet the pain of that day still cuts as deep as ever for James’s family.
Now, in a rare and heart-wrenching statement, James’s younger brother has broken his silence — and his words have shaken the nation all over again.
“I’ll never forgive them,” he said quietly, referring to Jon Venables and Robert Thompson, the boys convicted of killing his brother. “They didn’t just take James — they took the childhood I never got to have.”

Speaking with visible emotion, he described a life overshadowed by grief and fear, where even moments of happiness are tinged with guilt. “Every birthday, every Christmas, there’s an empty chair,” he added. “You try to move on, but the hole never closes.”
Those close to the Bulger family say this is the first time the brother has spoken so openly about the lasting trauma. For years, the family shielded him from the media spotlight — determined to give him the normality his older brother was denied. But behind closed doors, the pain remained.
“He’s carried that grief in silence for a long time,” said a family friend. “He grew up with people whispering his brother’s name, with documentaries, headlines, and debates about forgiveness. But no one ever asked what it’s like to live with that kind of loss from childhood.”
The brother’s confession has reignited a painful national conversation about crime, justice, and redemption. While some believe that forgiveness is the only path to healing, others agree with him — that some acts are simply beyond forgiveness.
For him, though, the answer is simple. “You can’t forgive what destroyed your family,” he said. “You can’t forgive what haunts you every day.”
Even after all these years, the Bulger family continues to live in the shadow of that terrible day in February 1993. Yet despite the pain, they remain united in one mission — keeping James’s memory alive, not as a victim, but as a little boy who was loved deeply and lost too soon.
As the brother put it, his voice breaking: “I was just a kid, but that day ended my childhood. And no matter how much time passes, that’s something you never get back.”
