Nintendo enthusiasts have been treated to a sneak peek of the beloved character Yoshi in the forthcoming Super Mario film.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, a direct follow-up to the 2023 box office sensation The Super Mario Bros. Movie, is set to hit the big screen on April 1, 2026. Much like the first film, the sequel is a collaborative effort between Nintendo and Illumination, the studio behind Despicable Me.

It will see Chris Pratt reprising his role as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, and Jack Black returning as the nefarious Bowser. However, it’s the introduction of everyone’s favourite green dinosaur that has fans buzzing with excitement.

The trailer reveals Mario and Luigi stumbling upon a colossal, inverted pyramid in a desert village where they discover Yoshi hidden inside a blocked pipe. The dinosaur then joins the duo, teaming up with Peach and Toad (voiced by Keegan-Michael Key) for another thrilling journey into outer space, reports the Express.

The new trailer has been met with joyous reactions from Nintendo fans, with one even confessing that Yoshi’s appearance brought them to tears. Many Reddit users lauded the decision to retain Yoshi’s signature sounds instead of assigning the character a celebrity voiceover.

One Redditor expressed: “So glad they didn’t have Yoshi speak full sentences. His noises are damn cute.”

Another concurred: “I’m glad Yoshi is making Yoshi noises and not voiced by Tom Holland or a BTS guy.” A third chimed in: “Yoshi looks so precious in this movie and I got teary when he showed up.

“Had to try not to fangirl too loud and wake up my mom. I’m so excited to see him in this and that it seems his Japanese VA is back.”

Nintendo enthusiasts have been quick to applaud the abundance of easter eggs hidden throughout the trailer for sharp-eyed viewers. One fan commented: “10/10 trailer for me. There’s just so much going on.

“It’s Odyssey, Galaxy, Mario 2 and 3 all smushed together. I’m super excited for it.” Another chimed in: “Yoshi with a Super Scope AND Baby Mario and Luigi. This movie is gonna be weird (in a good way).”

A third user remarked: “This just looks very chill and fun.” Whilst a fourth predicted: “Another $1B in gross ticket sales incoming.”

Yoshi has remained a cornerstone of Mario games since making his debut in Super Mario World back in 1990 on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). He’s since starred in his own spin-off franchise and features in other cherished Nintendo titles including Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros.

Yoshi won’t be the sole fresh face in the upcoming film. He’ll be accompanied by Bowser Jr, brought to life by Benny Safdie, and Rosalina, portrayed by Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson.
