SHE THOUGHT SHE WAS STARTING A NEW LIFE WITH THE MAN SHE LOVED… INSTEAD, SHE SAYS SHE SPENT 12 YEARS TRAPPED, BEATEN AND UNABLE TO ESCAPE IN PAKI-STAN

A woman who married a Pakistani migrant she met in Australia has been rescued after he allegedly kept her locked up and beat her daily for 12 years.

French national Sylvie Yasmina, 54, agreed to move to Pakistan with her husband – who is alleged to have been living in Australia illegally – but claims she was then put through more than a decade of hell.

She told police she was kept with their five children in an ‘extremely dilapidated room’ in the remote village of Bara.

Ms Yasmina claimed her ‘very violent’ husband assaulted their family ‘on a daily basis’.

They were found by police covered in bruises in the property where she says they were ‘effectively imprisoned’.

The mother and children were finally saved after one of their sons managed to sneak away and report the situation to the police, which led to a raid of their house.

The couple got married in Australia in 2003 and moved the family to Pakistan in 2014.

Ms Yasmina claims from then on she was deprived of any communication with the outside world for the next 12 years.

A senior police officer told BBC Urdu: ‘According to the woman… She was not allowed to meet anyone, their two older children had missed their studies, while the three younger children were born in Pakistan and never enrolled in school.’

The mother-of-five wrote in her statement to the police: ‘We were deprived [of our] freedom, my husband didn’t take care of us the way he should as a husband and the father of my children.

‘He beat us and put pressure on our lives on a daily basis.

She added: ‘I felt that my future was already ruined, the future of the children would also be ruined.’

Speaking to local press, Ms Yasmina said: ‘I arrived in Bara in 2014 and I went through very difficult circumstances with my own family.’

She went on to thank the relevant authorities ‘who rescued us and took us out of a very difficult situation.’

The mother said: ‘I am grateful for the help, for our lives… It was very, very difficult, we went through really bad times since 2014 so I’m so grateful that you guys helped us.

‘I am deeply grateful to all the officers, thank you so much. They made us feel so comfortable with no pressure.

‘I’m so grateful for my life and my children’s life. Thank you so much.’

The victims have been taken to a women’s shelter in Peshawar and they plan to move back to France, say police.

Ms Yasmina’s husband has not been identified by authorities.
