A prominent politician has been forced to step back from public commitments in the wake of a “tragic family loss”.

A prominent politician representing one of NSW’s biggest regional communities has been forced to step back from public commitments in the wake of a “tragic family loss”.

NSW Nationals deputy leader Kevin Anderson announced the death of his wife Anna Anderson in a social media statement on Thursday evening.

“Due to an unforeseen and tragic family loss I will be cancelling all my commitments for the 2026 Tamworth Country Music Festival,” he said.

“I deeply appreciate the understanding and support my family and I have already received.

“Thank you for the love and care shown to our family at this time.”

Ms Anderson was a mother-of-three and local pharmacist of more than three decades, according to The Northern Daily Leader.

She reportedly died unexpectedly on Tuesday, though a cause of death has not been given.

News of Ms Anderson’s death triggered an outpouring of grief on Friday, as well as support for the Tamworth MP.

“Much love and sympathy to you and your family Kevin,” one local said.

“We first met Anna when she came to manage Tamworth Pharmacy.

“She was such a happy and friendly person and served her community with such generosity.”

Another said the loss of Ms Anderson would “resonate in so many directions”.

“Fond memories of her and sincere gratitude for the care she showed our family at our difficult times. Rest in peace now Anna,” they said.

Locals described Ms Anderson as beautiful, kind, and someone “who showed a lot of care to many”.

Albury MP Justin Clancy said “Hearts go out to you, Kevin” and his children.

Lower house leader and Labor MP Ron Hoenig also offered his condolences to Mr Anderson and his family.

“My thoughts are with you all during this incredibly sad time,” he said.

Industrial Relations Minister Sophie Cotsis said: “My heartfelt condolences and deep sorrow Kevin and to your family.

“You are in my prayers at this very difficult time.”

Mr Anderson was first elected to the NSW Legislative Assembly for the seat of Tamworth in 2011.

He was elevated to deputy leadership of the NSW Nationals after former leader Dugald Saunders stepped aside late last year.

Mr Anderson served as Minister for Hospitality and Racing, as well as Lands and Water, under the former state Coalition government.

More recently, he has held the opposition portfolios for Seniors, Western NSW, Tourism, and Hospitality and Gaming.
