A stunning scandal has rocked the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), as the league announced that three referees have been fined a total of $500,000 and terminated from their positions after being found guilty of attempting to manipulate the outcome of a recent matchup between the Seattle Storm and the Indiana Fever.
According to a league statement, the referees conspired to sway the game in favor of the Seattle Storm, but their efforts ultimately failed, resulting in a wave of outrage, investigations, and now — swift disciplinary action.

One of the referees, whose name has not yet been disclosed publicly, is reportedly facing potential criminal charges and may be looking at possible jail time for their role in the scheme. League sources say the referee allegedly communicated with outside parties to influence betting outcomes, triggering the involvement of both federal investigators and WNBA ethics officials.
“This is a dark day for the integrity of the sport,” said a WNBA spokesperson. “We are committed to transparency and holding individuals accountable to protect the fairness of our game.”
The Indiana Fever, whose star rookie Caitlin Clark has drawn record-breaking crowds and ratings this season, were said to be the intended victims of the rigging attempt. However, the Fever still managed to hold their own in the controversial game — a testament, fans say, to the team’s resilience.
Social media exploded following the announcement, with many calling for stricter oversight of officiating crews and demanding more clarity on how deep the corruption may go.
Several players have weighed in. Indiana’s veteran guard reportedly stated:
“We play with everything we have, and to know someone tried to rob us of that… it’s disgusting.”
The WNBA has vowed to cooperate fully with legal authorities and implement new protocols to ensure that game integrity is never compromised again. An independent panel has also been convened to review the league’s officiating systems and recommend structural reforms.
