NSW Premier Chris Minns has announced that 2027’s election campaign will be his last, revealing that he won’t seek a further term beyond that.
At a press conference on Monday, Mr Minns was asked about Metro West, which is set to open in 2032, and his “dream” for how Sydney will look by then.
In his response, Mr Minns said he would not be the premier in 2032 after the 2031 election.

“Well, I won’t be here, at least in this role. But look, as a citizen, I hope, I genuinely hope, that we can make a massive impact in housing affordability for young people,” he told the media.
He even conceded that he “might get beat” in the 2027 election. NSW residents are set to return to the polls in March next year.
Mr Minns is the 47th premier of NSW and took on the role in March 2023 after leading Labor to its first election victory in 12 years.
He was elected into NSW parliament as the member for Kogarah in 2015, and became the leader of the opposition in June 2021.
Labor won the 2023 election largely off gains in Sydney’s west, even claiming previously safe Liberal seats.
After revealing he wouldn’t campaign for the 2031 election, Mr Minns reiterated the promises that got him into office in the first place.
“And the best way that NSW government can do that (improve housing affordability) is to put well-designed, brand new apartments close to public transport lines.
“If we can get some density closer to the city and we can legitimately say to the next generation of young Australians, ‘there’s a place for you in this expensive city.’
“It’s not just for millionaires and billionaires. You can have a place as well. That’s the ultimate aim for us.”
