A quiet pocket of regional Victoria has been rocked by tragedy after a man and a woman were found dead inside a home in Hernes Oak, a small community in the Latrobe Valley.
Emergency services were called to a property on McGraths Track about 12.15pm on Monday. When officers arrived at the scene, they made the grim discovery of a 46-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman deceased inside the residence. The shocking find has left the tight-knit local community stunned, as investigators work to piece together what unfolded behind closed doors.
Hernes Oak sits near Moe, roughly 140 kilometres east of Melbourne, in an area better known for its quiet rural surroundings than major crime scenes. News of the deaths quickly spread throughout the Latrobe Valley, with many residents expressing disbelief that such a tragedy could occur in their neighbourhood.

Police have confirmed that the man and woman were known to each other, a detail that is now central to the investigation. While authorities have not elaborated on the nature of their relationship, they indicated that there is no current search underway for any additional persons in connection with the incident. That revelation suggests investigators believe the circumstances may be contained to those inside the home — though exactly what transpired remains unclear.
At this stage, the cause of death has not been determined. Detectives and forensic teams are continuing to examine the property, carefully gathering evidence that may shed light on the final hours leading up to Monday’s grim discovery. An autopsy is expected to play a critical role in establishing how the pair died.
Victoria Police have urged anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers. Even seemingly minor details, they say, could prove significant as they work to establish a timeline of events.
The lack of confirmed information has inevitably led to questions within the community. Was this a tragic medical emergency, a domestic-related incident, or something else entirely? For now, authorities are remaining cautious, declining to speculate while the investigation is ongoing.
What is clear, however, is that two lives have been lost in circumstances that have deeply unsettled a normally peaceful region. As police continue their inquiries, residents in Hernes Oak and across the Latrobe Valley are left waiting for answers — and hoping for clarity about what led to the heartbreaking scene discovered on McGraths Track.
The investigation remains active.
