ONE HOUR AGO: “I Heard the Fire Alarm and Shouted to Warn Everyone—But Nobody Heard Me.”
First Survivor Speaks Out as Police Investigate Deadly Bar Fire That Killed 47
Just one hour after escaping the deadliest bar fire the city has seen in decades, the first survivor to reach safety has come forward with a harrowing account of what unfolded inside the crowded venue—and what he believes sparked the blaze that claimed 47 lives.
“I heard the fire alarm and shouted to warn everyone,” the survivor told police, his voice still shaking. “But nobody heard me. The music was too loud. People thought it was part of the show.”
The fire broke out late Saturday night at the popular downtown bar, which was packed with patrons enjoying a live performance. According to authorities, the flames spread with terrifying speed, filling the room with thick smoke within minutes and leaving dozens trapped inside.

“It Started Small—Then Everything Went Black”
The survivor, whose identity has not yet been released for his safety, said he was standing near the side of the bar when he noticed something was wrong.
“There was this sharp smell—like burning plastic,” he said. “At first, I thought it was a lighting issue or maybe a fuse. Then I saw smoke crawling along the ceiling.”
He claims the fire alarm sounded briefly but was drowned out by music and cheering. When he realized the danger, he began shouting and waving his arms, urging people to move toward the exits.
“People laughed. Some even looked annoyed,” he told investigators. “They thought I was drunk or causing trouble.”
Seconds later, the lights went out.
“That’s when panic hit. You couldn’t see your hands. People were screaming, pushing, falling over each other.”
A Narrow Escape
The survivor said he managed to reach a side exit that was partially blocked by stacked chairs and equipment.
“I don’t even remember how I moved them,” he said. “Adrenaline took over. I just knew I had to get out.”
He escaped with minor burns and smoke inhalation. Forty-seven others were not as fortunate. Emergency crews arrived within minutes, but the intensity of the blaze and the density of the smoke made rescue efforts extremely difficult.
Several victims were found near exits, suggesting they were attempting to flee when they were overcome.
Possible Cause: Pyrotechnics and Faulty Wiring
According to the survivor, the fire may have been triggered by a combination of indoor pyrotechnics and aging electrical systems.
“They had these spark effects on stage—nothing huge, but they were shooting up toward the ceiling,” he explained. “I remember thinking earlier that the ceiling looked low for that kind of thing.”
Police confirmed they are investigating whether stage effects ignited flammable materials above the ceiling, including insulation and soundproofing foam. Fire officials are also examining reports of faulty wiring and whether the venue was in compliance with safety regulations.
“We are looking at all possibilities,” said Fire Chief Daniel Ortega during a press briefing. “This includes the alarm system, exit accessibility, occupancy limits, and the use of special effects.”
Questions About Safety Violations
As the investigation continues, troubling details are beginning to emerge. Several survivors have told police that some exits were locked or obstructed, and that the bar was overcrowded at the time of the fire.
City records show the venue had previously been cited for minor safety violations, though officials say it passed its most recent inspection last year.
“This tragedy raises serious questions,” Ortega said. “If alarms cannot be heard, exits are blocked, or safety rules are ignored, the consequences can be catastrophic—as we have seen.”
Grief, Anger, and a Demand for Answers
Outside the charred remains of the bar, families and friends gathered throughout the night, lighting candles and posting photos of loved ones they lost. Many expressed anger alongside their grief.
“My sister went out to enjoy music,” said one mourner. “She never came home. Someone needs to be held responsible.”
The survivor who first escaped says he is haunted by the faces he saw inside.
“I keep thinking—if they had heard me, maybe some of them would still be alive,” he said quietly. “I did everything I could. But it wasn’t enough.”
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing and that criminal charges are possible, depending on the findings. For now, a city mourns, and one voice—nearly lost in the noise—stands as a chilling reminder of how quickly joy can turn to tragedy.
