A Coroners Court hearing has been held to formally identify the second victim of a landslip at a holiday park in Mount Maunganui last week.

Coroner Louella Dunn confirmed he was Måns Loke Bernhardsson, 20, from Sweden. He had been at the campground for just two days.

Evidence was presented by Detective Sergeant Brent Griffiths, a member of the Disaster Victim Identification team, at the Tauranga Moana District Court at 5.30pm.

The coroner ruled the identity of the body had been established as Bernhardsson and his remains could now be released to his family.

Bernhardsson’s body was found on January 24.

“I want to particularly express my sincere condolences to the family of Måns and their friends,” Dunn said.

“He was a 20-year-old tourist enjoying this country and he has tragically died. And I’m sure all of us in this courtroom – and indeed this country – offer our sincere condolences to this family for their tragic loss.”

‘Our hearts are broken’

In a statement this evening, Bernhardsson’s grieving father and uncle, Nils and Anders, remembered him as a “a super kind and loveable member of our family”.

The pair said Bernhardsson, an “extremely talented” artist who was passionate about downhill skiing and gymnastics, was loved by his many friends and family “very deeply”.

The tourist “hastily” booked his holiday down under with two friends to travel in a campervan across both main islands.

“He loved New Zealand, and often told us that he would like to stay here as long as possible,” the family said.

“Our hearts are broken, and we are going to miss Måns dearly. He was a cherished member of our family and it is going to be difficult to get used to not having him around.

“We have received overwhelming support from community, officials, local iwi, and people back home. We are very grateful for their support through this difficult time and we want to express our gratitude.”

Six people were missing after a slip at Beachside Holiday Park at the base of Mauao last Thursday struck the campsite’s toilet and shower block, knocking over campervans and tents.

The missing were named by police on Saturday as Lisa Anne Maclennan, 50; Måns Loke Bernhardsson, 20; Jacqualine Suzanne Wheeler, 71; Susan Doreen Knowles, 71; Sharon Maccanico, 15; and Max Furse-Kee, 15.

The first victim of the landslip was yesterday formally identified as Max Furse-Kee, 15.

Police earlier said the search would be moving to a “recovery phase” after human remains were found on Friday.

Recovery efforts for the victims resumed this afternoon after an hours-long pause brought on by concerns about land movement.
