A young boy has become the sole survivor of his family following a devastating head-on collision over the festive season involving a suspected drink-driver.

The tragic crash occurred at approximately 2am on December 20, claiming the lives of nearly all members of the Contreras family as they travelled home from a Christmas celebration in Fort Bend, according to the Fort Bend Sheriff’s Office.

Lizbeth Rodriguez Contreras, 27, and five year old Camila Peña were declared dead at the scene. The three year old boy and his dad, 26 year old Diego Peña Jr, were rushed to hospital by air ambulance. Tragically, the father didn’t make it, though the now-orphaned youngster remains in a stable yet critical condition.

Majesti Faith Lee, 27, has been arrested by police and faces charges of intoxication manslaughter and one count of intoxication assault. The family, from Harris County, were heading north from their festive gathering when Lee was allegedly driving south in the northbound carriageway, reports the Mirror US.

Officials confirmed that alcohol played a part in the devastating crash. Lee was also airlifted to hospital and treated for injuries that weren’t life-threatening, the press release stated.

Fort Bend County Sheriff Eric Fagan said: “Our hearts are with the family as they endure an unimaginable loss. This tragedy is a painful reminder of how quickly lives can be changed when impaired driving occurs, and why making responsible choices behind the wheel is so critical.”

“Diego remembers the moment his life changed when he discovered he was going to be a father. He naturally embraced being a very involved dad and took great pride in working overtime alongside Lizbeth to provide for their young family.”

Lizbeth, who taught 4th grade at Metcalf Elementary School, adored being a mother to her mini-me, Camila, and to the three year old, the fundraiser revealed.

“Camila had a contagious smile that would make it impossible for you to have a bad day when you were with her,” the GoFundMe page added. The GoFundMe page nearly hit its $100,000 target. Lee’s bail has been set at $1,050,000.
