If you’re in the market for a grand historical drama, consider one that’s been lauded as a “masterpiece” and an excellent film currently streaming on Prime Video.

This recommendation follows hot on the heels of film enthusiasts already buzzing about a WWII film even before its release, and a Netflix period drama likened to HBO’s Chernobyl, reports the Express.

The film boasts an 86 per cent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an impressive 88 per cent on the Popcornmeter, which is audience-rated.

Numerous individuals have previously posted on Rotten Tomatoes about the movie, which is based on an extraordinary true story.

One viewer awarded a stellar 5/5 stars and declared: “The best movie I have ever seen.”

They continued: “It’s a spectacularly beautiful film. Many of the professional film critics’ reviews criticise the ‘plot’, not recognising that the movie is a historical narrative of the vastly changing culture of more than a billion people [sic].”

A second person penned in their 4/5 star review that the film was a “humane masterpiece” that dramatises real-life events.

They added: “The final scene’s beauty perfectly concluded one’s life story and everyone’s currently fed perception, coming off as symbolically poetic along the respectful lines that only film form could artistically deliver as visual addition to the facts.”

A third person wrote in their top-rated review: “Absolutely loved it! One of my favourite movies, I strongly recommend it [sic].”

Another viewer lavished praise in their five-star review, stating: “Amazing historical film with a superb wardrobe, filmography, scenography, so on… It is a film that everyone should watch.”

This Hollywood production was adapted from Puyi’s 1964 autobiography and traces his journey from infancy to his ascension to the throne, followed by his political imprisonment and subsequent rehabilitation by the Chinese Community Party.

The narrative unfolds through flashbacks from Puyi’s incarceration in the 1950s to his existence in the early 20th century, a period of significant transformation for China.

The Last Emperor holds the distinction of being the first film shot within Beijing’s Forbidden City, prior to the country opening its doors to tourism.

The film features Chinese-American actor John Lone in the titular role, a performance that earned him a Golden Globe nomination.

The cast also boasts legendary British actor Peter O’Toole, renowned for Lawrence of Arabia, Joan Chen from Hero, Ying Ruocheng, Victor Wong, Dennis Dun, Vivian Wu, Lisa Lu, and Ryuichi Sakamoto, among others.

At the 60th Academy Awards, the film received nine Oscar nominations and triumphed in every category, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The Last Emperor also clinched three BAFTA Film Awards, four Golden Globes and a Grammy for its score.

The Last Emperor is currently available for streaming on Prime Video.
