A 12-year-old girl shot in the head and neck during the deadly mass shooting at a British Columbia school is now fighting for her life in critical care.
Maya, a student in Tumbler Ridge, was transported to Vancouver Childrenâs Hospital and is currently in critical care, according to a Facebook post from her mother, Cia Edmonds, and a GoFundMe campaign organized by Edmondsâ cousin.
Her mother shared the devastating update in a Facebook post following the shooting, which left nine people dead, including the shooter.

âIm writting this post sitting in Vancouver childrenâs hospital while my daughter fights for her life,” she wrote. “Today started as any other. [Now], however, my 12 year old daughter is fighting for her life while they try to repair the damage from a gun shot wound to the head. And one to the neck..”
“She was a lucky one, I suppose,” the mother continued. “Condolences to the other families during this tragedy… This doesnt even feel real… I never thought I would be asking for prayers.. but please please, pray for my baby.â
As PEOPLE previously reported, Royal Canadian Mounted Police said officers received reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School at approximately 1:20 p.m. local time on Tuesday, Feb. 10.
Six people were found deceased inside the school. Two additional people were found dead inside a residence in the community.
Authorities said the suspected shooter was found inside the school with what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury. The suspect has been identified as a female, but a name or motive has not been publicly released.
In addition to the deceased, RCMP said two victims were airlifted to a hospital with âserious or life-threatening injuries,â while as many as 25 others were being assessed and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities have identified the suspected shooter as 18-year-old Jesse van Rootselaar. Police said van Rootselaar is believed to have killed her mother and stepbrother at home in Tumbler Ridge before traveling to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, where six others were fatally shot.
She later died at the school from what authorities described as a self-inflicted injury.
A GoFundMe campaign organized by Krysta Hunt, who identified herself as Edmondsâ cousin, says Maya is currently in critical care.
âMy name is Krysta, and I am the Cousin of Cia, Mayas mother,â Hunt wrote on the page. âI am starting this go fund me to provide relief for Cia and Maya during this devastating time.â

âRecovery timeline is unknown. All we know is that Maya made it through transport from Tumbler Ridge to Vancouver Childrenâs Hospital and currently in critical care,â Hunt continued.
The page also states, âThis support will provide support for Maya through her recovery. And allow for Cia to be by her side without financial concern.â
