Heroics have saved the life of a policeman shot in the leg during a routine job in Queensland after officers left their cover, braving semi-automatic gunfire to drag their colleague to safety.
The police officer has undergone surgery for a shattered femur after being sprayed with bullets during a violent siege on the Fraser Coast, with terrified neighbours describing the moment gunfire erupted and families ran for their lives.
Officers were called to Horizon Ct in Yengarie about 5.54pm on Friday following reports of a domestic violence incident.

It’s alleged as police stepped out of their squad car, 45‑year‑old Adam O’Shea opened fire with a semi‑automatic weapon.
A 36‑year‑old first year constable — on his final shift before a move west — was hit in the leg. His colleagues dodged bullets to drag him about 100m to safety while performing urgent first aid under fire.
Inspector Paul Algie said their actions, including applying a torniquet, saved the rookie’s life.
“I’m incredibly proud of the actions of the officers on the ground,” he said.
“The officers that were working with the FYC that was shot saved his life through their heroic actions.”
Neighbours reported hearing a rapid barrage of shots.
“Probably four or five, pretty quickly after each other,” one witness told 7NEWS.

Within minutes, the quiet farming district was overrun by specialist police in camouflage, armed with rifles and establishing an exclusion zone. Residents were ordered indoors.
“Just get inside, turn the lights out, and wait it out,” the witness said.
“You could feel as safe as you could in that situation.”
Police confirmed four people fled the home — including a woman carrying a small child.
“Obviously shaken up,” neighbour Janine Heather said.
As specialist officers attempted to engage with O’Shea, power was cut to the area.
A search of the property about 9.21pm later found him dead from a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police confirmed that O’Shea was not licensed to own firearms and was known to them.
Acting Superintendent Brad Inskip said officers feared from the outset the man may be armed, but rejected suggestions they were ambushed.
“I wouldn’t use the word ambush, but there was little interaction,” he said.
The injured officer’s family has flown in from New Zealand to be by his bedside at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.
No other officers or members of the public were hurt.
