“My mother insisted the dates didn’t make sense. She kept saying Emily had been acting strangely during the last trimester.”
THE DAY HE RETURNED FOR HIS SON… AND FOUND THE NURSERY EMPTY
PART 2 — THE TRUTH HE NEVER EXPECTED
The envelope slipped from Brandon Foster’s hand.
For several long seconds, he simply stared at the words.
Petition for Sole Legal Custody.
His mouth went dry.
“What DNA test?” he asked, his voice barely audible.
Attorney Victoria Hayes studied him carefully.
“So you truly don’t know.”
“I ordered one before Oliver was born.”
The nurse looked up sharply.
Brandon continued, his words coming faster now.
“My mother insisted the dates didn’t make sense. She kept saying Emily had been acting strangely during the last trimester.”
Victoria slowly nodded.
“Then you should probably read the next page.”
With trembling fingers, Brandon opened the envelope.
Inside were laboratory records.
The first report bore his name.
Probability of paternity: 99.9999%.
His knees nearly buckled.
“I knew it…” he whispered.
Then he noticed something else.
Another report.
Same laboratory.
Same collection date.
Different conclusion.
Result: Inconclusive. Sample contaminated.
His heart skipped.
“What is this?”
Victoria answered calmly.
“The report your wife received.”
Brandon looked up.
“What?”
“Someone paid the laboratory to replace the original result before it reached Mrs. Foster.”
The maternity ward became completely silent.
Brandon’s breathing grew shallow.
“My wife thought I questioned our son’s paternity?”
Victoria nodded.
“For five days.”
His stomach turned.
Emily had undergone emergency surgery believing her husband doubted their baby was his.
“No…”
His voice cracked.
“I never showed her the test.”
“You didn’t have to.”
Victoria handed him another document.
A copy of an email.
The sender made his blood run cold.
Margaret Foster.
His mother.
The message had been sent to the laboratory administrator.
My son must never receive the corrected report until I approve it.
Attached beneath the email was a wire transfer.
$75,000.
Brandon stared at the screen in disbelief.
“My mother…”
“Bribed an employee.”
Victoria finished the sentence for him.
“That employee has already confessed.”
The nurse quietly stepped away, sensing what was coming next.
Brandon reached for his phone with shaking hands.
His mother’s number.
Straight to voicemail.
Again.
No answer.
He called his younger sister.
She answered immediately.
“Brandon?”
“Where’s Mom?”
Silence.
Then a sigh.
“I wondered when you’d find out.”
His heart pounded.
“You knew?”
“I found the emails two weeks ago.”
“You said nothing?”
“She told me Emily would destroy this family if the baby turned out to be yours.”
Brandon closed his eyes.
“My God…”
His sister’s voice trembled.
“She made Emily believe you wanted the DNA test because you thought she’d cheated.”
Every memory suddenly rearranged itself.
Emily crying after prenatal appointments.
Her growing distance.
The night she quietly asked him,
“Do you trust me?”
He had answered yes.
But he never asked why she suddenly needed reassurance.
His mother already knew why.
Victoria removed another folder.
“There is more.”
Brandon almost didn’t want to open it.
Inside were printed text messages.
Hundreds of them.
Not between Emily and another man.
Between Margaret Foster…
…and Chloe Sinclair.
Brandon felt physically sick.
The first message read:
Keep him in Aspen until after the delivery. Emily will be easier to manage alone.
The next one.
If he sees the baby immediately, he’ll never question anything.
Another.
Delay him for at least a week. I’ll handle the hospital.
Brandon stared at the words.
His affair.
His mother’s manipulation.
His own stupidity.
They had become the perfect weapon against Emily.
He whispered,
“Chloe knew?”
Victoria looked at him steadily.
“For almost eight months.”
The hospital doors suddenly opened.
Two detectives walked inside.
One approached Victoria.
“We’ve just arrested the laboratory administrator.”
Victoria nodded.
“And Margaret Foster?”
“She was taken into custody twenty minutes ago.”
Brandon looked up.
“What?”
The detective turned toward him.
“Fraud.”
“Evidence tampering.”
“Conspiracy.”
“And obstruction of medical records.”
He paused.
“There may be additional charges.”
Brandon leaned against the wall.
Everything around him felt unreal.
He thought he had come to reclaim his wife.
Instead, he had discovered his entire family had been built on lies.
Victoria gently closed the folder.
“Mrs. Foster asked me to give you one final message.”
Brandon lifted his head.
“What did she say?”
Victoria spoke quietly.
“She said…”
“…you abandoned us by choice.”
“What your mother did afterward belongs to her.”
“But the ten days you never came…”
“…those belong to you.”
Every word landed like a hammer.
Because she was right.
No one forced him to ignore Emily’s calls.
No one forced him to spend ten days with Chloe.
No one forced him to leave his wife recovering from major surgery while another man—Emily’s brother—learned how to bathe his newborn son.
Those choices had been entirely his.
Weeks later, Chloe publicly admitted Margaret had promised her a senior executive position inside the family company if she kept Brandon away from Minneapolis during Oliver’s birth.
The affair had never been love.
Brandon had simply been another person Margaret knew how to manipulate.
Emily never celebrated the arrests.
She focused on healing.
She cared for Oliver.
She attended therapy.
She rebuilt a peaceful life surrounded by people who had actually shown up when she needed them most.
Months later, family court finalized temporary custody.
Brandon received supervised visitation.
Not because Emily wanted revenge.
Because the judge believed trust had to be rebuilt before parenting rights could expand.
The first time Brandon saw Oliver again, the little boy was already smiling.
He reached toward Brandon without recognizing him.
The tiny hand wrapped around one finger.
Brandon cried harder than he had in his entire life.
Emily watched quietly from across the visitation room.
She felt no satisfaction.
Only acceptance.
Some betrayals happen because people lie.
Others happen because someone simply doesn’t come home.
Brandon lost his marriage the day he chose a luxury resort over a hospital room.
Everything that followed merely exposed how expensive that decision truly was.
When the visit ended, Emily placed Oliver back into his stroller.
Brandon looked at her one last time.
“I know saying I’m sorry isn’t enough.”
