Carrie Underwood Talks Deliberations and “Concessions” Made During the Vote
With the stakes higher than ever, the judges were faced with the tough reality of eliminating half of the remaining contestants. Carrie Underwood shared her thoughts with USA Today and opened up about the emotional toll it took on her as a judge. Having once been in the contestants’ shoes, she knows how it feels to be on the other side of the table.
“The whole process was hard. My brain was like, ‘[Eliminating] six! I can’t do it!’” Carrie admitted. “We were pretty much aligned in our choices, but there were a couple of concessions we had to make. But all in all, I think we’re happy with how it turned out, other than the fact that six people had to go home—it’s a huge jump.”
Lionel Richie Agrees: The Pressure Was Real
Lionel Richie echoed Carrie’s sentiments, explaining that the decision-making process was far from easy. As a former contestant himself, Lionel emphasized the empathy that comes with making such tough calls. “The 2½ minutes we had to decide was like, ‘Come on, Carrie. Give us the answer,'” Lionel joked, acknowledging the immense pressure they all faced.
Luke Bryan Highlights the Focus on “Whole Body of Work”

While Carrie and Lionel found it difficult to make their final picks, Luke Bryan added that there were a few contestants who stood out during the deliberation. “There were definitely two contestants we were really focused on saving,” Luke revealed. “But as we made our decisions, we kept in mind their whole body of work, not just their most recent performances.”
He concluded by expressing confidence in the choices they made, hoping that the contestants they saved would continue to impress as they advanced further in the competition.
Tune In for the Top 14 Showdown
Now that the Top 14 has been revealed, fans of American Idol can look forward to the next thrilling episode airing Sunday, April 27. Who will rise to the occasion, and who will face elimination next? The journey to the finale is only just beginning.
