A 10-year-old boy is facing a murder charge after a 13-year-old girl was stabbed to death in February, according to the Houston Police Department.
The juvenile’s name or photo have not been released to the public due to him being a minor.
The victim is identified as Riley Dearmas, 13.
On April 22, members of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team arrested the boy in Charlotte, North Carolina.
What happened
Police said they received a report of a large fight and stabbing outside of an apartment in the 8000 block of Grow Lane around 8 p.m. on Feb. 4.
Responding officers said they found a 13-year-old girl who had been stabbed at least one time. Emergency medical personnel took the girl to the hospital where she later died.
HPD Lt. Larry Crowson said they believe the 13-year-old girl was part of a larger group of 20 to 30 people who came over to the apartment and started “assaulting people.” Allegedly, the incident stemmed from an earlier disturbance at school that involved several teenagers, police say.
At the scene, officers spoke with a mother and her 10-year-old boy who said he stabbed the girl. The boy allegedly turned himself over to officers, claiming self-defense.
Homicide detectives are at the scene interviewing witnesses and looking for surveillance video of the incident.
In Texas, the minimum age for juvenile criminal responsibility is 10 years old.
