Let’s Break Down ‘The Night Agent’ Season 2 Finale CHRISTOPHER SAUNDERS/NETFLIX
Peter Sutherland really deserves a break. After saving the president in season 1 of The Night Agent, he immediately set off to Thailand for his first official Night Action assignment. That assignment went south and Peter (Gabriel Basso) spent all of season 2 running around Manhattan, uncovering a massive conspiracy involving a secret chemical weapons program, Foxglove, a potential terror attack, and a mysterious intelligence broker. This all came to a head in the season 2 finale, “Buyer’s Remorse,” which set the stage for an even more action-packed season 3.
So, what exactly happened and what does it mean for The Night Agent season 3? Allow me to break The Night Agent season 2 ending down for you.
Peter Follows in His Father’s Footsteps
In the lead-up to the finale, a desperate Peter betrayed his country, breaking into the UN to retrieve a hard drive for the unnamed intelligence broker (Louis Herthum), in exchange for information on where terrorists were keeping Rose (Luciane Buchanan). Having rescued her and returned to the CIA, Peter makes a truce with his boss: he’s free to help them stop a mass terror attack, but once that’s over, he’ll be arrested and taken into custody.
After a few weeks in detention, Peter gets a new assignment: go back into the wild, continue working with the intelligent broker, and gain intel about the nature of his relationship with the next president. Poor Peter. He spent his entire life trying not to become his father, only to betray his country just the same. (Granted, under different circumstances, but still tragic!)
Rose Heads Back to California…For Now
After Rose, Peter, and Catherine (Amanda Warren) successfully stop the terror attack, Peter makes Rose promise never to come looking for him again. “As long as I’m a Night Agent, people are going to try to use you to get to me because they know that your safety, that you, mean everything to me. As long as you come searching for me, you’ll be at risk,” he says. It’s a sweet declaration, but I’m not so convinced this is the end of Rose and Peter.
Rose may be heading back to California in the finale, but her new company, Adverse, is now in possession of the most powerful tracking software in the world. I doubt it’ll take too long before government officials come knocking, roping her into Night Agent chaos all over again.
Who is Jacob Monroe?
In a flashback to 8 years ago, we see an ambitious, racist politician approaching the intelligence broker at an alumni event, finally identifying him as Jacob Monroe. It’s the start of a beautiful friendship and in the present day, this politician is now Republican Governor Hagan, a man on the cusp of becoming the next President of the United States. In the present day, after the UN Heist, Jacob gives Hagan information on the hard drive to bury the Governor’s Democratic opponent. (It turns out, the Democrat approved Foxglove and was the one who sold chemical weapons to a war criminal and covered it up—not great!)
Having now successfully swung a presidential election, Jacob thinks that he owns both Peter and Hagan, but at the end of their transaction, the governor hints that he might be the one really pulling the strings.
Bonus: This sequence also teased the return of Special Agent Chelsea Arrington (Fola Evans-Akingbola), who is working Hagan’s detail. (Take note, this could come in handy for Peter in season 3.)
And What About Noor?
Noor (Arienne Mandi) and her mother are granted asylum, and though they are still grieving the loss of her brother, Noor manages to get a job working at a library and is focusing on the future. The only connection she has to her old life other than her mother is Rose.
What Does the Season 2 Ending Mean for The Night Agent Season 3?
TLDR; Peter is now a double agent tasked with gaining intel on the intelligence broker (for the record, he still doesn’t know his real name) and keep him from compromising every piece of top secret intelligence the president has access to. Easy! To do that, he’ll have to play on both sides of the law.
My current season 3 theory is that Peter will get himself in a situation where he needs Rose’s help, or Rose’s new software will be at the heart of a conflict in season 3. Who knows, maybe Jacob will ask Peter to steal access to Adverse? Remember, Jacob knows about Rose (he called her early in the season), so he could use her as leverage against Peter again.
