Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James and his production company, SpringHill Entertainment, have partnered with Netflix for the new movie Rez Ball which will drop on Sept. 27.
Netflix released the official trailer for the film on Tuesday.
Set in Chuska, New Mexico, the film follows the Chuska Warriors high school basketball team rich in Native American heritage as they band together following the death of the team’s star player.
The movie is adapted from the 2019 nonfiction book Canyon Dreams by Michael Powell. The film’s title has a double meaning. The first is that it is derived from basketball played on Native American reservations.
Per NPR’s Michael Schaub, the book also describes rez ball as a unique spin on the game of basketball featuring “a quicksilver, sneaker-squeaking game of run, pass, pass, cut, and shoot, of spinning layups and quick shots and running, endless running … Play was swift and unrelenting as a monsoon-fed stream.”
Rez Ball was co-written by Sydney Freeland and Sterlin Harjo. Harjo co-created and served as showrunner for the FX on Hulu series Reservation Dogs.
Freeland directed two episodes of the series. This will be her second feature film and first since 2014’s Drunktown’s Finest.
Rez Ball will be the second movie produced by James to be released by Netflix. His company previously produced Hustle starring Adam Sandler that dropped on the streamer in 2022.
The film will debut at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, running from Sept. 5-15, in the special presentations section.
