Two-Time NBA Champion with LeBron on the Heat Reveals Why James Is Not the GOAT: “He Doesn’t Deserve It”

The Miami Heat enjoyed their most prolific era in the NBA during the early 2010s. Led by LeBron JamesDwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh, they reached the NBA Finals four consecutive times, winning two championships in 2012 and 2013. Now, a former player from that team has explained why LeBron James is not the GOAT and shared his reasoning.

In an appearance on Dwight Howard’s podcast, Above The Rim With DH12Mario Chalmers expressed his belief that Michael Jordan is the greatest player in NBA history. “When you talk to people—guys I played with, guys who played before me—they all say the same thing. With Jordan? It was fear,” he began.

“They called him ‘Black Jesus.’ They called him ‘Black Cat.’ There was a different stigma that came with playing against MJ,” the former point guard added. “That’s just not the same with LeBron.”

Chalmers began his NBA career in 2008, so he never played against Jordan, who retired for good with the Washington Wizards in 2003. However, he did play alongside LeBron James for four seasons with the Miami Heat from 2010 to 2014, winning two championships together.

That experience allowed Chalmers to develop a deep understanding of James’ abilities. Don’t get it twisted—LeBron is the best overall player you could want as a superstar. Physically gifted, can do everything on the court,” he said. “But my GOAT? The guy I’d want to live and die with in a big moment? That’s Michael Jordan. That’s just me.

The debate between Jordan and LeBron

Many fans and analysts who favor Michael Jordan over LeBron James in the GOAT debate point to Jordan’s ability to deliver in clutch moments, changing the course of games in pivotal situations.

Jordan’s legacy is defined by his six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls, captured in two separate three-peat runs (1991-1993 and 1996-1998). He holds the remarkable distinction of winning every NBA Finals he participated in, earning the Finals MVP in each of those six championships.

In contrast, LeBron James has had a longer career and has set numerous records that differentiate him from other players, such as becoming the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. However, his Finals record is less flawless: he lost four times with the Cleveland Cavaliers (2007, 2015, 2017, and 2018) and twice with the Miami Heat (2011 and 2014).
