When Islamic State took power it opened the floodgates for rape and chaos. An Australian woman was among those who chose to be part of it, a court has been told.
But next week Melbourne Magistrates’ Court could allow ISIS bride Zeinab Ahmad to walk free on bail until her trial.
Ahmad, 31, is facing two counts of crimes against humanity, including enslavement and using a slave, which was allegedly authorised by an ISIS ‘slave-rape handbook’.
If released, she will live with her uncle Abraham Abbas, who lashed out at media in last month’s Melbourne Airport melee when some of the brides returned to Australia.
Mr Abbas is the brother of Ahmad’s mother and alleged slaver Kawsar Abbas, who was also arrested and charged but also hopes to win bail in the coming weeks.
The Daily Mail is not suggesting Mr Abbas is in any way affiliated with the terror group, and last week told a court he was fully aware of what they stood for.
‘I hate those b****rds,’ he said.
‘They’re evil and they don’t represent anything we believe in Islam at all.’

Zeinab Ahmad wants to be released back into the community
His niece was living in Syria with her family during Islamic State’s reign and the court heard startling details of what IS said was acceptable.
‘The Islamic State Office of Research and Fatwas published the pamphlet “Su’al wa-Jawab fi al-Sabi wa-Riqab” [Questions and Answers on Taking Captives and Slaves],’ Detective Senior Constable Marc Clendenning told the court.
‘[It] states that it is permissible to rape female captives, to sell, purchase, gift or trade slaves, and outlines instructions around the sexual abuse of slaves.
‘The Q&A also provides for the physical punishment of female captives as a “form of discipline” within certain limits.’
The Australian Federal Police officer spent almost a day outlining the grotesque ways female captives were treated by ISIS.
‘On May 9, 2015, Issue 9 of Dabiq included an article entitled “Slave-girls or Prostitutes” which defended Islamic State’s practice of rape in the taking and enslaving of Yazidi women and encouraged captors to marry female slaves,’ he said.
‘Also in 2015, the Islamic State published a “Pamphlet on slavery: The Creator’s Maxims on Captivity and Enslavement” further justifying the captivity and enslavement of “disbelievers at war”.
‘One of the main goals was “humiliation”. The pamphlet again justifies the rape of slaves.’

Ahmad’s father Mohammad Ahmad – who is now in a Syrian prison – has been described as a vile rapist
Yazidi slaves, many of whom were bought and sold, were gifted or otherwise traded numerous times.
Australian authorities allege Ahmad was more than just a witness to the torment and abuse of slaves, but was an active participant.
‘The accused was in charge of everything if her parents were not in the house. She was like a deputy,’ the detective told the court.
The number of Yazidi people killed during the Islamic State attack on Sinjar, which began on August 3, 2014, is estimated at between 1,434 and 3,100, the court heard.
‘Eighty-three execution sites have been identified around Sinjar District,’ Sen Const Clendenning said.
‘It is further estimated that 6,800 Yazidi women and children were captured by IS, of which many remain missing and unaccounted for to this day.’
Federal authorities allege Ahmad’s father Mohammad Ahmad – who is now in a Syrian prison – was a brutal slavedriver.
The court heard he routinely assaulted the family slave, punching and dragging her down two flights of stairs by her hair on one occasion.

An ISIS flag was allegedly draped on the wall of the Ahmad home in Syria
‘I bought you for sex and housework,’ she was told.
The girl had allegedly been taken captive as a 15-year-old when ISIS combatants murdered her mother and brother.
Over the next five years she was said to have been traded about 17 times to different ISIS members, who beat, tortured and raped her.
Police allege the Ahmad family bought the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, for US$10,000 during Ramadan in 2017.
Mr Ahmad told others the young girl was his wife, but allegedly told her: ‘I bought you for the purpose of raping and at the same time serving the home.’
Sen Const Clendenning said Mr Ahmad was permitted to take everything from her and to treat her as he treated his other wives
At the time he had two known wives and seven children aged between 17 and 29.
The court heard Zeinab Ahmad shared her bedroom with the slave and allegedly kept a Glock pistol in the room.

Zeinab Ahmad allegedly calls for death upon the United States and its allies
‘The doors were not locked but she had nowhere to go or anyone to go to,’ Sen Const Clendenning said.
‘She did not know where to go and did not have a phone.’
The court heard Ahmad was fully aware of her father’s treatment of their alleged slave, and herself carried an ISIS identity card.
‘Each of the family carried both Daesh (ISIS) and Australian ID,’ Sen Const Clendenning said.
‘The family did not try to escape and did not want to go to another place that was not controlled by Daesh.
‘The family liked Daesh.’
Ahmad had initially been married to an Australian, Dawood Elmir. The couple wed in Australia before travelling to Syria in 2014
He was killed two years later in a drone strike, before her second marriage to Australian Abu Mus’ab, who was killed by an air strike soon after.

Zeinab Ahmad hopes to be released into the home of her uncle Abraham Abbas, who lashed out at photographers at Melbourne Airport last month
Her third husband was an Egyptian ISIS fighter known as Abu Omar al-Masri.
He had been on an ISIS pension after losing his left arm in the war and injuring his leg. His whereabouts remain unknown, the court was told.
Ahmad hopes to convince the court she only had good intentions while living among ISIS killers.
‘I help out with orphans and widows,’ she told an aunt in 2017. Ahmad claimed to work at the Bureau of Zakat’s Women and Orphans department in Raqqa for $48 a month.
Police allege she had previously helped a bogus charity set up by her father to raise funds to finance her family’s move into the war zone.
The prosecution allege her social media posts also showed clear support for ISIS.
In March 2015, Ahmad wrote about ‘judgement day’, and warned ‘…blackness and dust will cover the disbelievers’.
Days later she applauded the execution of an allied pilot who had been placed in a cage and burned alive.

Chaotic scenes welcomed the returning ISIS brides at Melbourne Airport last month
The posts went on throughout that year, the court heard.
‘Team Australia has more blood on their hands than ISIS has on their knives,’ she wrote in May.
‘Out of the 200 Australians who have left Australia to join ISIS, three decide to return home for whatever reasons…three out of 200. Enough said.’
That June, she added: ‘May Allah’s wrath and anger be upon the enemies of Islam.’
The court heard Ahmad claimed to be very happy in Syria, telling friends she ‘loved it’ there.
When Elmir was killed, she wrote about her pride that he had died a martyr, fighting for the cause, and in 2017, she prayed for an Islamic victory.
‘May Allah swt [short for an Islamic honorific – subhanahu wa ta’ala] deal with all of the oppressive leaders and tyrants all over the world,’ she added.
Next Monday, the court will hear more evidence about allegations Ahmad continues to hold radical and dangerous beliefs.

Lawyer Grace Morgan (right) leaves the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court last week
Her lawyer Grace Morgan is expected to tell the court her client is a victim and poses no threat to the community.
Her uncle has offered to put up a $75,000 surety to secure her release.
But police say there is an unacceptable risk that Ahmad would endanger the community if released on bail.
They argued that no set of bail conditions could adequately manage or reduce that risk.
Chief Magistrate Lisa Hannan will make her decision after all the evidence has been heard and final submissions have been made.
