A seven-year-old girl has drowned in a school holiday tragedy in Queensland.

The young girl was last seen swimming at Colleges Crossing, Chuwar – about 38km southwest of Brisbane – about 5pm on Saturday.

Her disappearance triggered a major emergency response, with Polair and police divers joining the search effort.

Locals joined the desperate search, using torch lights from their mobile phones to scour the area, The Courier-Mail reports.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
