A young Adelaide woman has been killed after she was struck by a garbage truck just metres from her home.

Emergency services were called to Melrose Street at Melrose Park in Adelaide’s north, about 9.45am on Wednesday after reports a pedestrian had been hit.

Several streets were cordoned off for hours as police and paramedics rushed to the scene.

A resident told 7NEWS he heard the moment the woman was struck and ran outside to try to help.

The 23‑year‑old had been walking to the bus stop to head to work at a burger bar in the Adelaide’s East End when the Tea Tree Gully Council truck hit her.

She died at the scene.

“My heart goes out not only to the families impacted, the individuals impacted, and the communities, but the first responders that go out to attend to these scenarios as well,” Emergency Services Minister Rhiannon Pearce told 7NEWS.

“They go out each and every day to provide support for the scenario.”

Major Crash investigators examined the scene, while a specialist mechanic from the Heavy Vehicle Enforcement Unit inspected the truck.

Police say the driver — a 48‑year‑old Prospect man — was not physically injured.

As a result of the investigation, he has been reported for careless driving causing death, issued with an instant loss of licence, and will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.
