Married At First Sight went ahead on Wednesday night after the death of Mel Schilling was announced on Tuesday evening.

Channel Nine aired a tribute to the relationship expert before and after the episode, but it was not enough for some.

Many tuning in on Wednesday felt that the show should have been cancelled out of respect for the star.

Mel, who completed filming on the series last year, is still appearing in on air in new episodes and featured heavily in Wednesday’s Dinner Party scenes.

‘Should be cancelled tonight out of respect for Mel Schilling,’ wrote one person on X.

One more chimed in: ‘It feels weird to go back to regular scheduled programming.’

‘Almost wrong watching tonight’s episode after last night’s news,’ said another.

One viewer commented: ‘I wish they wouldn’t show tonight’s show. Out of respect for beautiful Mel and her family and extended family.’

‘It’s not the same watching this after today’s sad news. What a gracious and courageous woman Mel Schilling was,’ said one more.

Others disagreed, with one person commenting: ‘I think it’s a mark of respect shows her at her best.’

‘Whilst I agree, I don’t think Mel would have wanted that,’ responded someone else on social media.

Another agreed: ‘They announced before the program that it was what Mel had wanted.’

John Aiken led Channel Nine’s tribute to Schilling after her death at age 54.

In a heartbreaking segment before Wednesday’s episode, Aiken fought tears as he shared moving words about his co-star and best mate.

‘It’s with great sadness and heavy heart that today the MAFS family lost a colleague and a dear friend, Mel Schilling,’ he said.

‘She was someone that could light up a room, she was full of joy, had a huge smile, and whenever she was on set, everyone lifted,’ Aiken continued.

‘She brought fun and joy, humour, and she also brought an authenticity which we all loved to be around. It was such a delight.

‘She was a leader, she was an inspiration. Never complained, just rolled her sleeves up and got on with things.

‘Someone that has meant so much to all of us, and it’s not fair.

‘Married At First Sight won’t be the same without her.

‘I would like to send all thoughts and prayers to Gareth, her husband, and Maddie, her wonderful daughter, and to also take a moment now and remember Mel.

‘We love you.’

Channel Nine then aired a solemn message dedicating the following episode to Mel’s memory.

‘With gratitude for her warmth, honesty and insight. A beloved member of our team, she’ll always be part of the Married At First Sight family,’ the notice read.
