A driver has been charged after allegedly mowing down a 15-year-old boy on an e-bike during a fiery confrontation on Sydney‘s Northern Beaches before fleeing the scene.
The 15-year-old boy was allegedly hit by a white Volkswagen on Abbott Road in North Curl Curl on Monday evening, before the driver allegedly fled the scene.
The boy sustained serious leg injuries and was taken to Randwick Children’s Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
The alleged driver of the car, a 38-year-old man, was arrested an hour later at Dee Why Police Station at about 5.30pm, before being transferred to Manly Police Station.
He was charged with drive furiously in motor vehicle do/cause bodily harm, negligent driving (no death or grievous bodily harm), and drive while licence application refused.
In a statement, NSW Police said officers were told the driver had allegedly made an offensive hand gesture towards of a group of teens before driving away.
‘The group of teenagers – all riding e-bikes – followed the car before one of the teens – a 15-year-old boy – engaged in a verbal argument with the driver,’ the statement read.
‘During the argument, the alleged driver threw a water bottle at the teen before driving away. The 15-year-old then threw the same water bottle back at the car; however, it did not make impact.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Abbott Road and Pitt Road, North Curl Curl at around 4.30pm and treated the victim for serious leg injuries
‘The 15-year-old continued to follow the car before blocking it at the intersection, before the driver allegedly hit the teen causing the boy to be thrown from the e-bike.’
It’s understood two nearby off-duty police officers directed the driver to stop, however, he allegedly failed to do so and drove from the scene.
The man was granted strict conditional bail and will appear before Manly Local Court on May 20.
Shocked witnesses have reported seeing the car mount the kerb before hitting the boy, reversing and then driving off as passersby attempted to stop the driver from fleeing.
Laura, who was driving around the corner onto Abbott Road, said she stopped the car as soon as she realised someone had been hit. She said the boy’s legs were bleeding and grazed.
‘E-bikes are sometimes annoying, but you would not run someone over. That could have gone so much worse,’ Laura told the Manly Observer.
‘I do not know what is going on with the world.’
Another bystander told the Northern Beaches Advocate the car was ‘on top of the e-bike’ and the boy’s lower legs had been run over.
