Police have received hundreds of reports of sightings of missing boy Gus Lamont from as far away as Bali, but major crime detectives have made a sobering admission – while they won’t stop searching, it’s possible the little boy may never be found.

Eleven times police have visited the Yunta property where the four-year-old boy disappeared, their search stretching far and wide across the remote South Australian outback.

“Oh yes, it’s a wide open country and plenty of it. You could miss something,” neighbour Fleur Tiver said.

But the investigation has no borders. Detectives are still sifting through tip-offs from across the globe, with sightings reported in almost every state in the country, in Bali and even Syria.

However, they’ve all been discounted.

For now, the main focus remains at home, where Taskforce Horizon detectives have confirmed one of the little boy’s grandparents remains a suspect in the disappearance, which has been declared a major crime.

But a family friend of the Lamont family describes them as doting and loving.

“I mean, he’s absolutely their beloved grandson. I thought they were totally bewildered, I would say, more than anything. They sort of can’t understand what’s happened and why,” Tiver said.

Major crime detectives have conceded that as time goes on, the less chance there is of finding him. It’s unlikely they’ll return to the property they’ve searched so many times without a new lead.

Police have tracked down hundreds of people within a 100-kilometre radius from Oak Park Station around the time Gus went missing and have all but ruled out abduction.

A plane and drones will be brought in to cover off a larger radius one more time.
