The arrival of Luka Doncic has turned the Los Angeles Lakers into serious title contenders. Since the Slovenian superstar joined forces with LeBron Jamesand Austin Reaves, the Lakers’ offense has been firing on all cylinders.

While James and Doncic were already established as elite playmakers, Reaves’ breakout season has solidified their trio as one of the most dangerous in the league. According to James, a major advantage of their offensive firepower is how opposing defenses tend to overlook Reaves, focusing instead on stopping him and Doncic.

Myself and Luka [Doncic] will have the two best defenders every night. There’s not many teams with a third defenderAnd that third defender has to guard Austin Reaves. We have the ability to interchange,” James explained on the first episode of his podcast “Mind the Game” with Steve Nash.

Reaves is enjoying a career-best season, thriving in his role alongside James and Doncic. Through 67 games, he’s averaging 19.9 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.9 assists per game while shooting 45.5% from the field and 36.0% from three.

How the Lakers’ ‘Big Three’ take their offense to the next level

Beyond their individual skill sets, James emphasized how Doncic and Reaves create more opportunities for the entire team. “Now, when I’m on the floor with both of them, I feel like there’s so much room to operate. Luka’s gravity alone opens up so many options for all of us,” James noted. “The defense is forced to react to his playmaking, and then Austin can space the floor, which keeps things balanced“.

Having Reaves as a reliable offensive weapon also makes decision-making easier for James. “When I’m driving, I know that I have the option to kick it to Austin, and he’s going to make the right play, whether it’s hitting an open shot or making a quick decision. It’s just a natural flow when we’re all on the court together,” James added.

James, Doncic and Reaves make NBA history

The Lakers’ trio has already proven its dominance in a statement win over the Memphis Grizzlies. Not only did they lead the team to victory, but they also made NBA history.

After combining for 85 points, 21 rebounds, and 23 assists, they became the first trio in NBA history to each record 25+ points, 5+ rebounds, 5+ assists, and 2+ made three-pointers in the same game.

Reaves led all scorers with 31 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists, while Doncic followed with 29 points, eight rebounds, and nine assists. James rounded out the trio’s historic performance with 25 points, six rebounds, and eight assists.
