Authorities said the boy had been swimming with his brother during a family tour when the shark struck.
His shocked family watched the horror unfold before the injured child was hurried onto a boat and transported to New Providence for medical treatment.
Police said they were alerted just before 3.30pm on Tuesday that the youngster was being taken by boat for urgent care following the encounter near Staniel Cay, Exuma.
The boy’s identity has not been released and officials have not disclosed the extent of his injuries.
Authorities also have not said what type of shark was involved in the attack.
But he was later listed in stable condition after receiving treatment in hospital.
The attack happened in the Exuma Cays, a chain of picture-postcard islands famed for swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving.
The area attracts thousands of tourists every year and is known for its crystal-clear waters and luxury resorts.

Despite the Bahamas being marketed as a paradise for beachgoers, the country has one of the highest rates of shark attacks in the world.
The island nation, made up of more than 700 Caribbean islands, is home to over 40 species of shark and is often dubbed the shark-diving capital of the world.
According to the International Shark Attack File, the Bahamas recorded five unprovoked shark bites last year, although none were fatal.
The Exuma region has also seen shark attacks before.
In 2018, American boy Asher Jones was bitten by a nurse shark in an incident caught on camera.
The latest attack comes after American tourists Rileigh Decker, 20, and Summer Layman, 24, survived a horrifying shark mauling in Bimini Bay in February 2025.
The pair were reportedly attacked by several sharks and suffered injuries but lived to tell the tale.
Worldwide, there were 65 unprovoked shark bites recorded in 2025 out of 105 shark-human interactions, according to the International Shark Attack File.
Experts advise swimmers to stay in groups, avoid areas with schools of fish and steer clear of the water at dawn or dusk, when sharks are most active.
